    摘要: An engine which employs a cam follower mechanism to reduce wear and reduce the size of an assembled engine. The cam follower mechanism utilizes guide rails located to reduce side thrust on the valve stem. The engine employs a high speed quill shaft to synchronize independent cam shafts existing in each of a plurality of interconnected engines. The engine is assembled using a single size fastener to provide a uniform stress gradient within the engine. The engines are interconnected utilizing O-ring seals. The engine provides a piston crown utilizing a connecting rod directly connected to the bottom surface of the piston crown. The piston crown is stabilized along the longitudinal cylinder axis by a rail guide. Connecting rods are provided which require less than one hundred eighty degrees (180.degree.) circumference of a crankshaft pin for support so that a plurality of connecting rods can be associated with a single crankshaft pin. A tabbed bearing fits under the plurality of connecting rods to provide lubrication between the connecting rods and the crankshaft pin. Connecting rods are held to the crankshaft pin by a circular retaining ring. The engine provides a separate cylinder head and cylinder which are attached via a circular deformable retaining band to form a metal to metal seal. The engine provides an independent lubrication system in each engine. Coolant or lubricant is provided to each engine in parallel so that the temperature of the coolant entering each engine is the same. A large diameter modular crankshaft is provided.

    摘要: A rotary power device of modular construction is disclosed in which one or more pistons are reciprocably received in a cylinder sleeve, and the sleeve is rotatably supported in a bore within a housing. A cam and follower mechanism acting between the housing and piston governs reciprocating motion of the piston(s) within the sleeve. Rotary power can be extracted from the sleeve, or reciprocating power can be extracted from the piston(s). The rotating cylinder functions as a sleeve valve and permits, depending on the porting, use of the device as a gas-expansion engine (e.g. steam or compressed air) or pump, or as a two-stroke or four stroke internal combustion engines using spark or compression ignition. Engines built according to the invention are simples, compact, and can be perfectly balanced, and multiple engine modules may be coupled together in various configurations to form power plants of various sizes.

    摘要: This invention relates to a modular mechanism and methods for synchronizing the speed of one engine with a reference speed such as another engine particularly as found in boats. A physically limited range of fine tuning is combined with the normal operation of existing manual control over its full range of course adjustment, without interference, by way of an adjustable link coupled non-resiliently in series with the throttle linkage and allowed to slide along a non-circular shaft or key that causes micrometer adjustments in length of the link between the manual control and the throttle when the key is turned. The key can be turned by a differential device or reversible motor responding to continuous or interruptable power related to the engine speeds. The device will not bind and need not be stopped from turning at or between its limits because both ends of the linkage cannot encounter opposing stops simultaneously, the link can slide longitudinally on the key, and the key rotates freely at the limits of adjustments. Phasing is also described.

    摘要: A modular internal combustion engine is provided in which a single crankcase can be adapted to a plurality of different types of engine configurations. The crankcase is open at its top so that each upper side edge of the crankcase forms a mounting flange while a crankshaft is rotatably carried by the crankcase. Block members and adapter members are provided and each includes a mounting flange formed along each longitudinal side. All of the mounting flanges are substantially identical to each other so that any one mounting flange can be detachably secured to another mounting flange. Thus to construct the engine, one mounting flange of either the block or adapter member is attached to one crankcase mounting flange while one mounting flange on the other member is attached to the other crankcase mounting flange. In addition, the remaining mounting flanges on the block and adapter members register with each other and are secured together. At least one block member is utilized in each configuration and the block member is adapted to reciprocally carry at least one piston therein. The piston in turn is operatively coupled to the crankshaft to rotatably drive the crankshaft upon reciprocation of the piston in the conventional manner.

    摘要: Disclosed is a modular engine assembly incorporating a primary engine, an auxiliary engine and a device for storing kinetic energy. The kinetic energy storage device is drivingly coupled to the primary engine. In response to demand for additional power, the auxiliary engine is selectively engaged with the energy storage device by a clutch. The auxiliary engine is thereby turned over and brought up to speed. As the auxiliary engine is brought up to speed, its ignition is turned on and fuel is supplied in sequence whereby the auxiliary engine starts or fires only after it is turning over at a high RPM. Once started, the auxiliary engine drives the transmission through the clutch and primary engine thus increasing available power upon demand.
