Injection is preferably directed towards an intermediate edge which is well-defined between the first and second depressed regions, resulting in portions of the injected fuel plume being directed to both the squish regions and the portion of the bowl situated below the intermediate edge. The designs promote premixed or MK (Modulated Kinetics) combustion, with a concomitant reduction in soot and nitrous oxides (NOx) emissions while maintaining or enhancing brake specific fuel consumption.

In a Diesel engine with variably actuated valves, the cam controlling each inlet valve is shaped to provoke the opening of the respective inlet valve during the engine's normal exhaust phase and thus realize exhaust gas recirculation within the engine, due to the fact that during the normal exhaust phase, part of the exhaust gas passes from the cylinder into the inlet port, from where it returns to the cylinder during the next induction phase, while part of the exhaust gas that had previously passed into the exhaust port returns to the cylinder during the induction phase due to the additional opening of the exhaust valve, in consequence of which the exhaust gas charges that return to the cylinder are subjected to further combustion in the next engine cycle.

A fuel valve is provided in the Diesel fuel supply line to a cylinder to be deactivated. A return fuel line is provided and when the fuel valve is open, the fuel is returned to the fuel supply tank. In closed position fuel is directed to the top portion of the cylinder. The cylinder is provided with a conventional exhaust valve. However, the intake valve is modified to be located closer to the top of the cylinder. The previous gap of about ¼ inch is reduced to about 0.005 to 0.015 inches. This allows the intake valve to remain open instead of closed as the piston moves upwardly in a deactivated cylinder when the exhaust valve is closed, to allow air to exit through the intake valve from the cylinder and relieve pressure when the piston is in the full up position. This valve system may be located in all Diesel engines including Diesel powered motorcycles.
