Abstract: An engine includes: two cylinder rows so placed as to be aligned side by side; a turbocharger; and an intercooler shared by the two cylinder rows, and connected to the turbocharger. The intercooler has: a cool liquid flow path through which a cool liquid flows, and an intake air flow path through which intake air from the turbocharger flows. The cool liquid flow path has an inlet and outlet of the cool liquid on one side in a first direction along the flow of the cool liquid. The intake air flow path has an inlet of the intake air on one side in a second direction along the flow of the intake air, and an outlet of the intake air on another side.

Abstract: A piston engine described allows identical cylinder heads rather than requiring mirror image left and right heads. The engine has front and rear sides, with engine block containing two opposing cylinder banks. Identical heads mounted on block, with overhead camshaft structures in each head. Crankshaft between banks has front and rear gears. At rear is reverse-rotation gear mechanism with internal and external gears. External gear engages crankshaft's rear gear. First chain connects reverse-rotation internal gear to first camshaft sprocket on one head at rear. Second chain connects crankshaft's front gear to second camshaft sprocket on other head at front. Allows driving overhead camshafts of identical heads rather than requiring left and right mirror image heads.

Abstract: The disclosed subject matter includes an intake manifold for an internal combustion engine that can have a labyrinth structure located therein configured to cause fluids, such as blow-by from engine exhaust, to move in a non-linear direction. The intake manifold can have a plenum including an inlet opening, a plurality of runners, each of the runners extending from the plenum and including a first end opened to the plenum and a second end configured to be connected to the internal combustion engine, and a ventilation chamber, the ventilation chamber extending along each of the runners. The ventilation chamber can include a plurality of ports spaced along the ventilation chamber, each port opens into a respective one of the runners, and a labyrinth inside the ventilation chamber and extending across the ventilation chamber.

Abstract: Internal combustion engines that operate in an inverted orientation in which the piston is closer to the local gravitationally dominant terrestrial body's center of gravity at top dead center position than at bottom dead center position are disclosed. The engines may have non-circular, preferably rectangular, cross-section pistons and cylinders, and the pistons may include a skirt with a field of pockets that provide a ringless, non-lubricated, seal equivalent. The pistons also may have a domed piston head with depressions thereon to facilitate the movement of air/charge in the cylinder. The engines also may use multi-stage poppet valves in lieu of conventional poppet valves, and a split crankshaft. The engines may use the pumping motion of the engine piston to supercharge the cylinder with air/charge.

Abstract: A multi-cylinder engine includes first and second subsets of cylinders. A dedicated-cylinder exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is associated with the second subset of cylinders. A plasma ignition system is disposed in the second subset of cylinders. A controller operates the plasma ignition system to control the plasma igniters to execute plasma discharges in the second subset of cylinders to generate residual exhaust gas, which is recirculated through the dedicated-cylinder EGR system to the intake air system for introduction into intake air.

Abstract: An intake manifold is provided that controls swirl on entry to a combustion chamber. Each intake manifold includes a fin or rib portion positioned to reduce or eliminate swirl induced by the configuration of the intake manifold, particularly when used in a large engine having a left bank and a right bank of combustion chambers. By controlling swirl induced by the intake manifold, swirl consistency is improved between engine cylinders and between the left bank and the right bank, improving the consistency of power output and reducing emissions, particularly particulate emissions, also called smoke.
