The spring also causes the first and second crankshafts to remain indexed at 90.degree. with respect to one another when the first and second engine modules are in operation and the first and second crankshafts are connected and the third crankshaft is disconnected from the second crankshaft.

A gasoline engine driven flexible line trimmer is provided with a modularly constructed power head section which significantly facilitates the original manufacturing assembly, and subsequent service disassembly, of the power head. In a clutch drive embodiment thereof, the power head has four readily separable modules--an engine module comprising a main engine shroud to which the engine is internally secured; a fan housing module; a starter module comprising a starter housing and a recoil starter mechanism retained therein; and a coupling module comprising a clutch housing carrying therein structure for operatively interconnecting the engine's clutch to the flexible drive shaft disposed within the trimmer shaft. In a direct drive version thereof, the power head has two separable modules--the engine module and a combined fan housing, starter and coupling module defined by a single housing within which the starter and coupling structure is carried. Pull rope installation in the starter mechanism is facilitated and made safer by pulley locking and retaining structure incorporated in the starter module, and improved air filter element sealing is provided by virtue of a specially designed air filter housing and choke plate assembly associated with the carburetor. Shaft vibration transmitted to the trimmer user through the supporting shoulder strap structure is significantly reduced by a specially designed resilient strap connector assembly securable to the trimmer shaft.

A vehicle drive plant comprises at least two prime movers mounted with their shafts aligned at an interposed base block enclosing a gear train communicating the prime mover shafts with a common output shaft. The gear train may include bevel gears at the individual prime mover inputs, being coordinated by at least one intermediate bevel pinion. A spur gear communicating with a mating gear at the output shaft is then mounted at one of the bevel gears. With a four prime mover plant there may be spur gears at the prime mover inputs, the output shaft having an aligned stub shaft extension. The output shaft, as well as the stub shaft, carries a gear wheel having a cylindrical gear rim for cooperation with prime movers located to the same side of the plane of the division as the output shaft, or stub shaft, respectively. Each of last mentioned gear wheels is further united with a bevel gear and the two bevel gears are coordinated by means of at least one interposed bevel pinion. The base block may be divided in a plane perpendicular to the prime mover shafts, and transmission members of the gear train are located so as to become accessible from the plane of division, when the base block is opened.

A rotary internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder in a stator sealed between parallel end plates, a power shaft concentric with the cylinder bore and journaled in bearings in the end walls, an annular eccentric rotor fitted onto the shaft, and an annular piston concentric with and fitted over the rotor making sliding sealing engagement with both end plates. An abutment centered preferably between 10:00 and 10:30 o'clock on the stator seals the space between the cylinder and piston from endplate to endplate and forms the counter-clockwise end of a combustion-expansion chamber. A second abutment, centered preferably between 1:30 and 2:00 o'clock, seals the space between the cylinder and piston from endplate to endplate and forms the clockwise end of the combustion-expansion chamber. The combustion chamber centered at 12:00 o'clock comprises a shallow arcuate cavity adjacent the path of the piston and opening into the cylinder. Fuel injection means for the invention engine maybe mounted on an endplate in advance of the first abutment or positioned on the end wall at approximately 12:00 o'clock to inject forward directly into the combustion chamber. Various means for admitting compressed air into the combustion-expansion chamber and exhausting the spent gases as well as various types of abutments are also disclosed.
