Abstract: Systems and methods for a heat engine system are described. In one embodiment, a system comprises a heat engine compressor, a heat exchanger, and a heat engine expander. The system comprises a partial state condenser in fluid communication with the heat engine expander. The partial state condenser includes a sense reservoir to hold the working fluid, a reservoir sensor to sense an electrical property of the working fluid, and a reservoir valve. The reservoir valve is in fluid communication with the sense reservoir, the heat engine compressor, and a heat engine condenser. The system comprises a processor to execute instructions to determine a specific energy of working fluid based on the electrical property of the working fluid and control the reservoir valve based on the specific energy to maintain a two-phase saturated state point within the partial state condenser based on the electrical property.

Abstract: An auxiliary power unit for an aircraft, including an internal combustion engine having a liquid coolant system, a generator drivingly engaged to the internal combustion engine and having a liquid coolant system distinct from the liquid coolant system of the internal combustion engine, a first heat exchanger in fluid communication with the liquid coolant system of the internal combustion engine, a second heat exchanger in fluid communication with the liquid coolant system of the generator, an exhaust duct in fluid communication with air passages of the heat exchangers, and a fan received in the exhaust duct and rotatable by the internal combustion engine for driving a cooling air flow through the air passages. The liquid coolant system of the engine may be distinct from fuel and lubricating systems of the auxiliary power unit. A method of cooling a generator and an internal combustion engine is also discussed.

Abstract: A pneumatic motor with dual air intake includes a pneumatic cylinder and a rotor. The pneumatic cylinder includes a cylinder body, and an elliptic-cylinder-shaped accommodating room located in the cylinder body. The cylinder body has two air inletting paths, two air venting paths, two air venting holes and a front axial hole, which communicate with the accommodating room and outside. The rotor includes a rotor body rotatably accommodated in the accommodating room of the pneumatic cylinder, a plurality of grooves parallel provided on the rotor body, a plurality of vanes accommodated in the grooves respectively, and a front axle extended from the rotor body and inserted through the front axial hole. As a result, the pneumatic motor with dual air intake is lowered in friction of the rotor when it rotates, raised in power output, and lowered in vibration when in use.

Abstract: An intake assembly for a compressor providing compressed air to an internal combustion engine core, including an air conduit having at least one heat exchanger extending thereacross, an intake plenum for the compressor, a first intake conduit connected to the air conduit upstream of the heat exchanger(s), a second intake conduit connected to the air conduit downstream of the heat exchanger(s), and a selector valve configurable between a first configuration to allow a fluid communication between the intake plenum and the air conduit through the first intake conduit and a second configuration to prevent the fluid communication through the first intake conduit. Fluid communication between the intake plenum and the air conduit through the second intake conduit is allowed at least when the selector valve is in the second configuration. An engine assembly and method of supplying air to a compressor are also discussed.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes a housing defining an internal cavity, an inner body sealingly moving within the internal cavity for defining at least one combustion chamber of variable volume, a pilot subchamber in communication with the at least one working chamber, an ignition element in communication with the pilot subchamber, a main injector communicating with the at least one combustion chamber, and a pilot injector having a tip in communication with the pilot subchamber. The tip of the pilot injector includes at least a first injection hole defining a first spray direction and a second injection hole defining a second spray direction different from the first spray direction. The first spray direction extends toward the communication between the pilot subchamber and the at least one working chamber. A method of performing combustion in an internal combustion engine is also discussed.

Abstract: An engine assembly for an aircraft, including an internal combustion engine having a liquid coolant system in fluid communication with a heat exchanger, an exhaust duct in fluid communication with air passages of the heat exchanger, a fan in fluid communication with the exhaust duct for driving a cooling air flow through the air passages of the heat exchanger and into the exhaust duct, and an intermediate duct in fluid communication with an exhaust of the engine and having an outlet positioned within the exhaust duct downstream of the fan and upstream of the outlet of the exhaust duct. The outlet of the intermediate duct is spaced inwardly from a peripheral wall of the exhaust duct. The engine assembly may be configured as an auxiliary power unit. A method of discharging air and exhaust gases in an auxiliary power unit having an internal combustion engine is also discussed.

Abstract: An engine comprises a compression portion and a combustion portion. The compression portion comprises twin-screw rotors, male engaged with female. The combustion portion comprises twin-screw rotors, male engaged with female. The male compression rotor and the male combustion rotor share a same longitudinal axis, and the female compression rotor and the female combustion rotor share a same longitudinal axis. A combustion plate is disposed between the compression portion and the combustion portion, and prevents flow of gas from the compression portion to the combustion portion, except through a small orifice centrally located on the combustion plate. A valve is affixed to the male rotors adjacent to the combustion plate, covering the lobes of the male rotors and extending beyond the lobes of the male rotors. Abstract: An internal combustion engine having combustion chambers that rotate about a main shaft axis in a step-wise manner. A first and second rotors each have elongate pistons that are interdigitated so that when one rotor rotates with respect to the other rotor, some chambers between the interdigitated pistons are reduced in volume and other chambers are increased in volume. Respective one-way bearings connect the first and second rotors to the main shaft to incrementally rotate it. Fuel mixture and exhaust apparatus is connected to one end of the engine to feed a fuel mixture to the increasing-volume chambers and extract the exhaust from other decreasing-volume chambers. At the same time, yet other chambers are experiencing compression and ignition cycles. An oil pump is driven by the first and second rotors for circulating a lubricant from a reservoir, through the engine parts to be lubricated and then back to the reservoir to cool the lubricant.
