Abstract: There is disclosed an aircraft engine assembly including an engine having an engine shaft; an output shaft; a clutch in driving engagement between the engine shaft and the output shaft. The clutch has a first component in driving engagement with the engine shaft and a second component. The clutch is operable between first and second configurations. In the first configuration, the first component is rotatable relative to the second component and the engine shaft is rotatable relative to the output shaft. In the second configuration, the first and second components are engaged with one another and the engine shaft rotates with the output shaft. A mechanical lock is operable between first and second positions. In the first position, the mechanical lock is disengaged from the first component. In the second position, the first and second components are secured for joint rotation one relative to the other.

Abstract: An engine assembly including an internal combustion engine configured to be received in an engine compartment and a heat exchanger having a first conduit fluidly connected to a fluid circuitry of the engine and a second conduit fluidly connecting an interior of the engine compartment to its environment. The first conduit is in heat exchange relationship with the second conduit. The assembly further includes a forced air system operable in use to provide an air flow from the environment to the outlet via the second conduit of the heat exchanger and the engine compartment. The assembly further includes a selector valve configurable to selectively fluidly connect an air intake of the internal combustion engine with the interior of the engine compartment in a first valve position and with the environment in a second valve position. A method for supplying air to an internal combustion engine is also discussed.

Abstract: An engine assembly including an engine core including at least one internal combustion engine each including a rotor sealingly and rotationally received within a respective internal cavity to provide rotating chambers of variable volume in the respective internal cavity, a compressor having an outlet in fluid communication with an inlet of the engine core, a first intake conduit in fluid communication with an inlet of the compressor and with a first source of air, a second intake conduit in fluid communication with the inlet of the compressor and with a second source of air warmer than the first source of air, and a selector valve configurable to selectively open and close at least the fluid communication between the inlet of the compressor and the first intake conduit. A method of supplying air to a compressor is also discussed.

Abstract: A method of operating a compoundable engine that includes a turbine having a turbine shaft and an intermittent internal combustion engine having an engine shaft. The engine shaft is rotated at a first rotational speed. The turbine is driven by exhaust gases of the intermittent internal combustion engine to rotate the turbine shaft while the engine shaft rotates independently from the turbine shaft. A rotatable load is driven with the turbine shaft. A rotational speed of the engine shaft is increased from the first rotational speed until the turbine shaft reaches a predetermined rotational speed. After the turbine shaft has reached the predetermined rotational speed, the rotational speed of the engine shaft is adjusted until the turbine shaft and the engine shaft are drivingly engageable with each other, and the turbine shaft with the engine shaft are engaged such that both are in driving engagement with the rotatable load.

The compressor has an inlet in fluid communication with the common air conduit upstream of the at least one heat exchanger. The internal combustion engine may be a reciprocating engine.

Abstract: An auxiliary power unit assembly for an aircraft, including an engine assembly including an internal combustion engine, a first duct in fluid communication with an inlet of the internal combustion engine and configured to be in fluid communication with an environment of the aircraft, and a second duct configured to be in fluid communication with the environment. The second duct may be in fluid communication with an inlet of a compressor drivable by the internal combustion engine or with a compartment receiving the engine assembly. A filter extends across the first duct. The filter is removable from the first duct through an opening in a wall of the first duct, the opening accessible from an exterior of the engine assembly.

Abstract: A rotary internal combustion engine with a rotor body made at least in major part of a first material, including at least one land protruding axially from each of its end faces and defining a contact surface extending at a fixed position with respect to the end faces. The contact surface frictionally engages a portion of the inner surface of the internal cavity of the engine, and at least the outer surface of the land includes a second material. The second material has a greater wear resistance than that of the first material with respect to frictional engagement with the portion of the inner surface of the internal cavity contacting the land. A method of axially positioning a rotor of a rotary engine within an internal cavity of an outer body of the engine are also discussed.
