Abstract: Catalyst compositions suitable for use in the exhaust gas recycle stream of an internal combustion engine are provided. Such catalyst compositions typically provide significant amounts of methane in addition to syngas. A reformer incorporating such a catalyst for use in an exhaust gas recycle portion of an internal combustion engine powertrain is described. A powertrain incorporating such a reformer, a method of increasing the octane rating of an exhaust gas recycle stream, and a method of operating an internal combustion engine using methane-assisted combustion are also described.

Abstract: Methods, systems and kits for preparing carbamates as well as catalysts for preparing the carbamates, are disclosed. The methods for preparing carbamate can include providing a catalyst comprising cerium oxide (CeO2) and at least one metal selected from the group consisting of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), titanium (Ti), cobalt (Co), aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), tin (Sn), indium (In), and any combination thereof; contacting the catalyst with at least one amine and at least one alcohol to form a mixture; and contacting the mixture with carbon dioxide under conditions sufficient to form the carbamate.

Abstract: A method of making cerium dioxide nanoparticles includes: a) providing an aqueous reaction mixture having a source of cerous ion, a source of hydroxide ion, a nanoparticle stabilizer, and an oxidant at an initial temperature no higher than about 20° C.; b) mechanically shearing the mixture and causing it to pass through a perforated screen, thereby forming a suspension of cerium hydroxide nanoparticles; and c) raising the initial temperature to achieve oxidation of cerous ion to eerie ion and thereby form cerium dioxide nanoparticles having a mean diameter in the range of about 1 nm to about 15 nm. The cerium dioxide nanoparticles may be formed in a continuous process.

Abstract: Selective catalytic reduction filter (SCRF) devices and systems incorporating the same are provided. Systems can include an exhaust gas source, an exhaust gas conduit capable of receiving an exhaust gas stream from the exhaust gas source, and an SCRF device in fluid communication therewith. The SCRF device can include a filter, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst disposed on at least portion of the filter, and a soot oxidizing catalyst (SOC) material disposed on at least a portion of one or more of the filter and the SCR catalyst. The SOC material can include one or more transition metal oxides, excluding platinum group metals. The SOC material can include one or more of a titanium oxide, an iron oxide, a tungsten oxide, a cerium oxide, and acidic zirconia. The SOC material can be in amorphous form. The SOC material can be biased towards to the upstream side of the filter.

Abstract: Selective catalytic reduction filter (SCRF) devices and systems incorporating the same are provided. Systems can include an exhaust gas source, an exhaust gas conduit capable of receiving an exhaust gas stream from the exhaust gas source, and an SCRF device in fluid communication therewith. The SCRF device can include a filter, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst disposed on at least portion of the filter, and a NOx storage coating on at least a portion of the filter. The NOx storage coating can include one or more of palladium, barium, or cerium. The NOx storage coating can be biased towards the upstream side of the filter. The NOx storage coating can overlap a portion of the SCR catalyst. The system can further include a water-absorbing alkali oxide. The water-absorbing alkali oxide can be disposed within the SCRF device, the exhaust gas conduit, or in an upstream oxidation catalyst device.

Abstract: Graphene layers made of primarily sp2 bonded atoms and associated methods are disclosed. In one aspect, for example, a method of forming a graphite film can include heating a solid substrate under vacuum to a solubilizing temperature that is less than a melting point of the solid substrate, solubilizing carbon atoms from a graphite source into the heated solid substrate, and cooling the heated solid substrate at a rate sufficient to form a graphite film from the solubilized carbon atoms on at least one surface of the solid substrate. The graphite film is formed to be substantially free of lattice defects.
