摘要: A process of operating a spark-ignited internal combustion engine (SI-ICE) with improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions including under steady state and under lean-operating conditions at high overall air to fuel (AFR) ratios. A first supply of high octane hydrocarbon fuel, such as gasoline or natural gas, and a first supply of oxidant are fed to a fuel reformer to produce a gaseous reformate with a reforming efficiency of greater than 75 percent relative to equilibrium. The gaseous reformate is mixed with a second supply of oxidant, after which the resulting reformate blended oxidant is fed with a second supply of high octane hydrocarbon fuel to the SI-ICE for combustion. Steady state fuel efficiency is improved by more than 3 percent, when the reformate comprises from greater than about 1 to less than about 18 percent of the total volume of reformate blended oxidant fed to the engine.

摘要: A fuel reforming system includes an engine combusting reformed gas to generate mechanical power; an intake line connected with the engine to supply the reformed gas and air to the engine; an exhaust line connected with the engine to circulate exhaust gas exhausted from the engine; a fuel reformer provided at an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) line diverging from the exhaust line, mixing the exhaust gas passing through the EGR line with fuel and reforming the fuel mixed with the exhaust gas; a water temperature controller (WTC) provided at the engine to control coolant cooling the engine; a radiator for radiating a portion of heat generated from the engine to atmosphere through the coolant; a temperature sensor provided at the EGR line at a front end of the fuel reformer and measuring temperature of the exhaust gas at the front end of the fuel reformer; a coolant passage provided to connect an exit of the engine, the fuel reformer, the radiator, and an entrance of the engine in series; and a coolant supply control valve for supplying the coolant into an inside of the fuel reformer according to engine driving condition and temperature of the exhaust gas.

摘要: Catalyst compositions suitable for use in the exhaust gas recycle stream of an internal combustion engine are provided. Such catalyst compositions typically provide significant amounts of methane in addition to syngas. A reformer incorporating such a catalyst for use in an exhaust gas recycle portion of an internal combustion engine powertrain is described. A powertrain incorporating such a reformer, a method of increasing the octane rating of an exhaust gas recycle stream, and a method of operating an internal combustion engine using methane-assisted combustion are also described.

摘要: A supercharged internal combustion engine according to the present invention includes: a compressor arranged in an intake passage through which air that is taken into a combustion chamber flows and for supercharging intake air; an EGR passage that connects an exhaust passage through which exhaust gas that is discharged from the combustion chamber flows and a compressor upstream passage; an EGR valve for opening and closing the EGR passage; an intake bypass passage for releasing gas that has been supercharged by the compressor outside a compressor downstream passage; and an ABV for opening the intake bypass passage by opening when the gas that has been supercharged by the compressor is released outside the compressor downstream passage. The intake bypass passage connects the compressor downstream passage with the EGR passage on the side that is closer to the compressor upstream passage relative to the EGR valve.

摘要: Exhaust gas in a supercharged internal combustion engine is recycled from the high pressure side of the turbocharger to the charging air system of the engine. At least part of the recycled exhaust gas is humidified to largely 100 percent relative humidity. This on one hand cools the gas to that the temperature at initiation of the combustion in the engine cylinders is lowered, and on the other hand the heat capacity of the steam in the gas restricts the temperature raise occurring during the combustion. These factors both act to reduce the amount of NO.sub.x produced by the combustion. The addition of water is effected by a scrubber (16) which purifies the recycled gas. A blower (17) augments the pressure of the recycled gas. The scrubber may be made to generate fresh water by designing it with several stages where sea water is supplied to the first stage and fresh water to the last stage.
