A process for preparing a variety of secondary and tertiary alkyl formate esters via the coupling of methanol and secondary (or tertiary) alcohols. Iron-based catalysts, supported by pincer ligands, are employed to produce these formate esters in high yields and unprecedentedly high selectivities (>99%). Remarkably, the coupling strategy is also applicable to bulkier tertiary alcohols, which afford corresponding tertiary formate esters in moderately high yields and high selectivities.

A novel catalyst is provided which enables efficient production of an oxidation product by using an oxygen-induced oxidation reaction of an organic substrate. A novel method of using the catalyst enables efficient manufacturing of the oxidation product by oxidizing the organic substrate using oxygen. A catalyst used in the oxidation reaction of the organic substrate using oxygen contains compound (A), compounds (A) and (B), compounds (A) and (C), compounds (B) and (C), or compounds (A) and (B) and (C). A method for manufacturing the oxidation product using the catalyst involves bringing the organic substrate into contact with oxygen. Compound (A) is an inorganic peroxo acid, a salt of an inorganic peroxo acid, and/or N-halogenated succinimide, compound (B) is a nitroxide and/or a peroxide, and compound (C) is layered silicate.

The present invention provides a method for adsorbing carbon dioxide onto porous metal-organic framework materials, a method for cooling porous metal-organic framework materials, a method for obtaining aldehyde using porous metal-organic framework materials and a method for warming porous metal-organic framework materials. In each method, porous metal-organic framework materials are used while an electric field or an electromagnetic field is applied to the porous metal-organic framework materials, or while a magnetic field or an electromagnetic field is applied to the porous metal-organic framework materials. If an electric field is applied, at least one organic compound included in the porous metal-organic framework materials is a polar compound. Instead, if a magnetic field is applied, at least one metal included in the porous metal-organic framework materials has an unpaired electron.

Methods and compositions for providing novel catalyst supports are included herein. In one embodiment, included herein are yeast cell supports including one or more receptor proteins uniformly displayed on the surface of a yeast cell having the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Each receptor protein is anchored to a ligand that is selective for that protein, and each ligand is, in turn, bound to a catalyst. Both the catalyst support-catalyst combinations and the catalyst supports alone are contemplated by the invention.
