The present invention is at least a two-component thermoplastic elastomeric composition comprising at least one block copolymer wherein the composition has essentially the same comparative elasticity, high temperature serviceability and hardness as the unmodified, undiluted (neat) block copolymer portion of the composition. The composition also shows enhanced thermal stability and processibility and is well suited for fabricating elastic moldings, films and fibers as well as for formulating with asphalts, adhesives and sealants. The novel thermoplastic elastomeric composition comprises (a) from about 50 to about 99 percent by weight of at least one block copolymer and (b) about 1 to about 50 percent by weight of at least one ethylene interpolymer having a density from about 0.855 g/cc to about 0.905 g/cc, wherein the ethylene interpolymer in the amount employed is a substantially inert extender of the block copolymer and the composition is further characterized as having: i. storage moduli throughout the range of −26° C. to 24° C. of less than about 3.5×109 dynes/cm2, ii. a ratio of storage modulus at −26° C. to storage modulus at 24° C. of less than about 4, and iii. storage moduli at −26° C. and 24° C. about 0.2 to about 3 times higher than the storage moduli at −26° C. and 24° C., respectively, of the neat block copolymer portion of the composition.

Elastic ethylene polymers are disclosed which have processability similar to highly branched low density polyethylene (LDPE), but the strength and toughness of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). The polymers have processing indices (PI's) less than or equal to 70 percent of those of a comparative linear ethylene polymer and a critical shear rate at onset of surface melt fracture of at least 50 percent greater than the critical shear rate at the onset of surface melt fracture of a traditional linear ethylene polymer at about the same I.sub.2 and M.sub.w /M.sub.n. The novel polymers can also have from about 0.01 to about 3 long chain branches/1000 total carbons and have higher low/zero shear viscosity and lower high shear viscosity than comparative linear ethylene polymers. The novel polymers can also be characterized as having a melt flow ratio, I.sub.10 /I.sub.2, .gtoreq.5.63, a molecular weight distribution, M.sub.w /M.sub.n, defined by the equation: M.sub.w /M.sub.n .ltoreq.(I.sub.10 /I.sub.2)-4.63, a critical shear stress at onset of gross melt fracture greater than about 4.times.10.sup.6 dyne/cm.sup.2, and a single DSC melt peak between -30 C. and 150 C.

Maleic anhydride-grafted HDPE fibers are disclosed. The processing of LLDPE and fibers is enhanced by including HDPE or LLDPE which has been grafted with maleic anhydride to obtain succinic acid or anhydride groups along the linear polyethylene chain in the fiber feed stock. The fibers are formed by extruding molten LLDPE containing the grafted HDPE or LLDPE through an orifice to form a thin fluid stream, melt drawing the thin fluid stream, and quenching the melt drawn thin fluid stream to form a fine denier strand. Biconstituent fibers of LLDPE and grafted HDPE or LLDPE, mixtures of such fibers with other fibers such as polyester, and woven and non-woven fabrics made from such fibers and fiber blends are also discovered.

C. are provided by reacting a transition metal compound such as tetra(isopropoxy)titanium, an organomagnesium component such as a hydrocarbon soluble complex of dialkyl magnesium and an alkyl aluminum, e.g., di-n-butylmagnesium.x triethylaluminum and a hydrogen halide or an active hydrocarbyl halide such as t-butyl chloride. Polymerization processes employing this catalyst composition do not require conventional catalyst removal steps in order to provide polymers having suitable color and other physical characteristics.

The substantially linear olefin polymers preferably have at least about 0.01 long chain branches/1000 carbons and a molecular weight distribution from about 1.5 to about 2.5. The new polymers have improved processability over conventional olefin polymers and are useful in producing fabricated articles such as fibers, films, and molded parts.
