Use of the tool enables a single technician to change the timing belt on a high performance internal combustion engine employing double overhead camshafts even if the cam surfaces are aggressive and the valve return springs employ large spring constants.

This invention relates to a reciprocating internal combustion engine having a cylinder crankcase with a cylinder head with is designed to reduce the manufacturing and spare parts cost. A single design unified cylinder head is employed for liquid cooling and air cooling, the cylinder head having both cooling spaces for the liquid coolant and cooling fins for the cooling air. Coolant passageways in the cylinder head are connected to coolant spaces in the cylinder block portion of the cylinder crankcase by way of openings in the upper end of the cylinder block and openings in the cylinder head gasket which permit flow of coolant to the annuli in the cylinder head. In addition to the annuli, the coolant passageways in the cylinder head include a longitudinally extending header, horizontally extending web ducts extending radially inward from the annuli and vertically extending connecting conduits inclined relative to the cylinder axes interconnecting the web ducts and the header. Each connecting conduit extends through a pillar extending between the cover plate portion and the base portion of the cylinder head. The pillars are in the wind shadow of, and in a substantially parallel relationship to, injection nozzles installed in the cylinder head.

A number of embodiments of single overhead camshaft five valve per cylinder internal combustion engines. The camshaft and valve operating mechanism is designed so as to permit a compact assembly by placing the camshaft outwardly of the area between the valves. Both direct and rocker arm valve actuation embodiments are disclosed although in the direct valve operating arrangement, rocker arms are employed for operating some of the valves. The valve and bearing arrangement for the camshaft permits the cam lobes to be positioned closely adjacent each other to maintain compactness of the engine design. In all embodiments, a central spark plug position is accommodated and the spark plug extends generally parallel to the axis of the associated cylinder bore.

There is disclosed an internal combustion (V-8) engine having an improved form of cylinder head and intake manifold for augmented combustion air flow and improved fuel mixing wherein the intake chamber immediately upstream of the intake valve is provided with two inlet ducts rather than the usual one inlet duct. The primary inlet duct may be conventional; the secondary inlet duct branches off in a direction more nearly parallel to the central axis of the cylinder and preferably connects to an inlet pipe which draws air through an independent air filter. The secondary inlet duct is provided with its own butterfly valve which can be independently controlled either automatically or manually and may be provided with a fuel injector. Secondary inlet ducts of the system can be attached on the outside to the inlet stacks (for injected engines), to an air breather base (on carburated engines), or to draw filtered air from the atmosphere directly into the system. Engines as disclosed thus are less sensitive to the natural intake pulses caused by inlet valve opening and closing and have better resistance to reversion of the intake flow.
