摘要:
An artificial (namely synthetic) bone material is made up of a strength sustaining first component and of a biointegration promoting second component. The first component is made, for example of a bioceramic material providing a material strength, especially a compression strength, of at least 1000 N/cm.sup.2. The second component is made also of bioceramic material or even of bone tissue or it may contain bone tissue in combination with other biointegration enhancing components. Biointegration is greatly improved if the material of the second component comprises a specific surface of at least 1.5 m.sup.2 /gram. The second component is incorporated in accessible voids such as open cells, pores, bores, holes and/or other cavities of the first component, whereby the first component forms a frame or matrix for the second component and imparts to the artificial bone the required strength prior to, during, and after implantation. The artificial bone material, due to its accessible voids in the first component and capillary ducts in the second component can receive one or more pharmaceutical substances. The material is formed to have a wedge shape for replacing or complementing a damaged or destroyed natural bone or a portion of a bone. The second component can fully or partly disintegrate upon completion of the implanting to promote penetration of freshly grown bone tissue into the first component.

An implantable mesh including demineralized bone fibers mechanically entangled into a biodegradable or permanent implantable mesh is provided. A method of preparing the implantable mesh is also provided. The method of preparing the implantable mesh includes mechanically entangling demineralized bone fibers with non-bone fibers to form the implantable mesh. The mechanical entanglement of the bone fibers into the implantable mesh is achieved by applying needle punching with barbed needles, spun lacing, entanglement with water jets or air jets or ultrasonic entanglement with ultrasonic waves. A method of implanting an implantable mesh at a target bone tissue site is also provided.

A hierarchical porous material consists of multistage porous materials, comprising a material body, the body is formed bar a pore cavity graded according to the pore size of the material and a cavity wall surrounding to form the pore cavity. The pore cavities are uniformly distributed. The characteristics are as follows. A lower-level pore cavities are disposed on the cavity wall of an upper-level pore cavity formed by surrounding a three-dimensional space. Each level of pore cavities are mutually connected and the pore cavities within same level are also connected with each other. The uniform distribution of the pore cavities means that similar amount of pore cavities are distributed under any unit volume of the hierarchical porous material. The hierarchical structure of the cavity of the material enables it to meet a wide range of functional requirements.

A skeletal-hole plug comprising a hardened bone cement, which has a circular or polygonal column, and the column is a porous hardened bone cement with a porosity of 30% to 90% by volume, which can be used to rapidly fill the skeletal holes resulted from the removal of bone screws, or from the removal of teeth, and to induce rapid growth of osteocytes in the skeletal holes.

The present invention generally relates to nanoscale wires and tissue engineering. In various embodiments, cell scaffolds for growing cells or tissues can be formed that include nanoscale wires that can be connected to electronic circuits extending externally of the cell scaffold. The nanoscale wires may form an integral part of cells or tissues grown from the cell scaffold, and can even be determined or controlled, e.g., using various electronic circuits. This approach allows for the creation of fundamentally new types of functionalized cells and tissues, due to the high degree of electronic control offered by the nanoscale wires and electronic circuits. Accordingly, such cell scaffolds can be used to grow cells or tissues which can be determined and/or controlled at very high resolutions, due to the presence of the nanoscale wires, and such cell scaffolds will find use in a wide variety of novel applications, including applications in tissue engineering, prosthetics, pacemakers, implants, or the like.

Described is a medically useful article comprising a three-dimensional body including one or more implantable substances, wherein the body defines one or more reservoirs for receiving amounts of a biocompatible wetting liquid. In certain embodiments the body is disruptable upon wetting with the biocompatible liquid to form a conformable implantable material such as a putty, paste or more flowable wetted implant material. Also described are methods for manufacturing such medical materials, and methods for using such medical materials to treat patients.

This document provides methods and materials related to composites or coatings containing polypeptides attached to polysaccharides and/or molecules. For example, methods and materials related to composites or coatings containing polypeptides (e.g., casein polypeptides) attached to polysaccharides (e.g., cellulose) and/or molecules (e.g., calcium containing molecules such as calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate and/or polyesters such as polylactic acid and polyhydroxybutyrate) are provided. A coating provided herein can include both cationic and ionic polymers, polypeptides, or polysaccharides.

Shaped, composite bodies are provided. One portion of the shaped bodies comprises an RPR-derived porous inorganic material, preferably a calcium phosphate. Another portion of the composite bodies is a different solid material, preferably metal, glass, ceramic or polymeric. The shaped bodies are especially suitable for orthopaedic and other surgical use.
