Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices related to a method of controlling an autonomous vehicle, in particular, an autonomous diesel-engine truck are disclosed. In one example aspect, the method includes determining an available engine brake torque generation mechanism for reducing a current speed of the autonomous vehicle to a lower speed and selecting a brake mode corresponding to the engine brake torque availability. In case a rate of speed reduction is equal to or smaller than a threshold, the brake mode includes only an engine brake in which engine exhaust valve opening is adjusted for reducing the current speed. The threshold determined in part based on the available engine brake torque, gear position of the transmission, and the online estimated vehicle longitudinal dynamic model. In case the rate of speed reduction is greater than the threshold, the brake mode incudes a combination of the engine brake and the foundation brake.

Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine. The vehicle includes a controller configured to start a timer having a duration defined by a charge limit of a traction battery and during which the engine braking is maintained and reduce a predetermined rate of change speed limit of the engine is reduced. The starting of the timer is responsive to application of an accelerator pedal during engine braking. The controller is further configured to increase the predetermined rate of change speed limit such that engine braking is predicted based on the limit of the battery, responsive to application of an accelerator pedal during engine braking.

Abstract: A vehicle includes a fault-tolerant braking system that controls a brake assembly which is configured to adjust a braking force applied to one or more wheels. The fault-tolerant braking system further includes a brake-by-wire (BBW) system and a vehicle control module (VCM). The BBW system is configured to control the brake assembly in response to a braking request. The VCM is configured to detect a fault of at least one of the brake assembly and the BBW system. In response to detecting the fault, the VCM selectively operates the vehicle between a normal operating mode and at least one degraded driving mode that limits operation of at least one of the vehicle engine and the vehicle transmission compared to the normal operating mode.

Abstract: An operating method and device for a permanent brake system of a motor vehicle. The brake system includes a primary and a secondary permanent brake. Each brake generates respective adjustable braking torque components. The first primary brake has a response than the second primary brake. A third braking torque component is adjusted by the secondary brake. The permanent-brake braking request is applied by the first primary brake until the braking request exceeds a first threshold. The first threshold corresponds to a value less than or equal to a maximum braking torque generated by the first primary brake. After exceeding the first threshold, a component of the request is applied by the secondary permanent brake. A second threshold value corresponds to a value less than or equal to a braking torque that can be generated when the first primary permanent brake device interacts with the secondary permanent brake.

Abstract: A method for braking a vehicle driving forward, in which the vehicle has a propulsion system including a combustion engine with an output shaft (2a), a gearbox (3) with an input shaft (3a), an electric machine (9) comprising a stator and a rotor, and a planetary gear comprising three components in the form of a sun gear (10), a ring gear (11) and a planet wheel carrier (12). The vehicle is driven with one of the components connected to an output shaft of the combustion engine rotating with a lower rotational speed than one of the components connected to the electric machine. When the vehicle is braked, the electric machine is controlled to apply a brake torque to the input shaft of the gearbox, making the rotational speed of the combustion engine increase.
