Diallylic polysulfides (polysulfanes) are provided with sulfur chain lengths of 9 to 22. Also provided are bis(2-methyl-2-propenyl) polysulfides with sulfur chain lengths of 3 to 22. Also provided are 2-substituted bis(2-propenyl) polysulfides with sulfur chain lengths of 3 to 20. Also provided are the 2-cycloalken-1-yl polysulfides, 2-cyclohexen-1-yl polysulfides and 2-cyclopenten-1-yl polysulfides, with sulfur chain lengths of 3 to 20. Also provided are processes for extending the sulfur chain length of diallylic polysulfides and 2-substituted analogues thereof and allyl methyl polysulfides by bringing such compounds into contact with elemental sulfur and heating, or by mixing with molten sulfur.

Abstract:
A method for preparing 1,4-(Z,Z)-disubstituted-1,4-disulfurated-1,3-butadienes is disclosed. The butadienes can be further elaborated to provide 3,6-unsymmetrically-substituted-1,2-dithiins. Also disclosed are butadienes prepared by the method of the invention. These butadienes are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of antibiotic 1,2-dithiins.

The invention provides methods for inducing reversible chain cleavage of polymer chains in a crosslinked polymeric material. Reversible cleavage of the polymer backbone is capable of relieving stress in the polymeric material as the bonds reform in a less stressed state. The invention also provides methods for making polymeric materials capable of reversible chain cleavage, materials made by the methods of the invention, and linear monomers containing reversible chain cleavage groups which are useful in the materials and methods of the invention.

Also disclosed is a dental composition comprising the polymerizable monomer (A), a polymerization initiator (B) and a filler (C). The dental material and the dental composition are excellent in X-ray opacity, transparency, curability and stain resistance, and they have small polymerization shrinkage.

An object of the present invention is to provide a compound which imparts a sufficient water repellency and a suitable oil repellency to substrates such as a fiber, a paper, a wood material, a hide, a leather, a resin, a glass, a metal, etc. The compound of the present invention is a fluoroalkylcarboxylic acid of the general formula (I), and its derivative of the general formula (II) (e.g. fluoroalkyl alcohol, fluoroalkyl carboxylic acid chloride, fluoroalkylcarboxylic acid amide and fluoroalkylamine). ##STR1##
