Abstract: This invention pertains to systems and components useful for infusing medications such as insulin. Typically, the components are used to deliver insulin to a diabetic patient at a site of infusion over a period of time greater than 4 days. The system components typically comprise a cannula adapted for subcutaneous insertion into a diabetic patient. The system further comprises a fluid conduit adapted to deliver the insulin solution from a medication reservoir to the site of infusion and a depot in operable contact with the fluid conduit. The depot comprises selected materials including a site-loss mitigating agent (such as heparin) which inhibits inflammation at the site of infusion, and encapsulation of the cannula at the site of infusion. The site-loss mitigating agent is not premixed with the insulin, and instead is adapted to contact the insulin solution in the depot as the insulin solution flows from the medication reservoir to the site of infusion.

Abstract: The present invention provides a shape-memory alloy including a Au—Cu—Al alloy having 20 at % or more and 40 at % or less Cu and 15 at % or more and 30 at % or less Al, with the balance being Au and inevitable impurities. The shape-memory alloy has a Vickers hardness of 360 Hv or less. The Au—Cu—Al alloy of the present invention is an alloy capable of developing both biocompatibility and a shape-memory effect, and further capable of achieving artifactlessness in a magnetic environment. The Au—Cu—Al alloy can be produced by heat-treating a clad material formed of a combination of a hollow material made of a Au—Cu alloy and a core material made of metallic Al at 500° C. or more and 700° C. or less.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to methods for preparing a hydrophilic composition including intimately mixing a silicone component including at least one polysiloxane and a polymer component, and to hydrophobic polymer compositions prepared thereby. One aspect of the disclosure provides an article having a major exterior surface, the article comprising an intimate mixture of a silicone component including at least one polysiloxane; and a polymer component including at least one hydrophilic polymer having a water-absorption capacity of at least 50 wt. %; wherein the silicone component and the polymer component are present in the mixture in a dry weight ratio within the range of 99.9:0.1 to 30:70. In certain desirable embodiments as otherwise described herein, the intimate mixture is disposed at an exterior surface of the article, e.g., at the major exterior surface of the article.

Abstract: Nitric oxide-releasing materials, methods of making nitric oxide-releasing materials, and uses of nitric oxide-releasing materials are provided. The nitric oxide-releasing materials include a mesoporous silica core and an outer surface having a plurality of nitric oxide donors. Abstract: A medical device including a silicone hydrogel which is less likely to harden due to drying, and which is less likely to cause stimulation at a site in contact with a human body, is disclosed. The medical device includes a silicone hydrogel satisfying the following conditions: (1) the water content in hydrous state is within the range of 10% by mass to 70% by mass; (2) the content of silicon atoms with respect to the total mass in dry state is within the range of 8% by mass to 30% by mass; and (3) the tensile elastic modulus in dry state is within the range of 0.1 MPa to 3.5 MPa.

Abstract: Methods and systems for tracking surgical tools in a three-dimensional (3D) space are described. An example method includes receiving image data captured by a single camera of a first surgical instrument, wherein the image data comprises a two-dimensional (2D) image of a second surgical instrument. Using a machine learning model, a three-dimensional (3D) position of the second surgical instrument is determined. The example method further includes determining a feature of the image data based on the 3D position of the second surgical instrument, and outputting an indication of the feature using a user interface.

Abstract: A urinary catheter and container are described. The urinary catheter may have a catheter shaft attached to a handle, and a coating disposed on an outer surface of the catheter shaft. The coating may include a hydrogel, water and/or glycerin, and a polyethylene gylcol (PEG). The PEG may have a molecular weight equal to or less than 600, for example one or more of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 300 and PEG 400. The coating may be applied in a wet state and remain wet for an extended period of time in the container, thereby obviating the need for a lubricant, such as a water sachet or gel package, to accompany the catheter in the container. The container may include a gas impermeable foil material. The container may include an adhesive tab covering a perforated section, the adhesive tab including a pull loop.
