Abstract: A catheter including an inner liner, a reinforcement layer disposed about the inner liner and having a distal edge separated a predetermined axial distance in a proximal direction from the distal end of the inner liner. The reinforcement layer having a discrete annealed section with an altered crystalline structure having modified (e.g., decreased) stiffness relative to non-annealed sections of the reinforcement layer. A marker band is positioned over or adjacent to the distal edge of the reinforcement layer. An outer jacket is disposed about an interim assembled structure including the inner liner, the reinforcement layer, and the marker band to form an assembled structure. During manufacture, heat is applied to reflow together individual components of the assembled structure producing an integral composite catheter shaft.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a medical introducer includes placing an introducer sheath onto a mandrel, and overmolding an introducer hub onto a proximal end of the introducer sheath. The introducer sheath has one or more score lines formed on an inner surface and the mandrel has a number of surface protrusions so that when the introducer sheath is positioned on the mandrel, each of the surface protrusions contacts one of the score lines formed on the introducer sheath. The surface protrusions on the mandrel prevent plastic material from the introducer hub from contacting the score lines thereby maintaining the score lines during the overmolding.

Abstract: Catheters with at least two curved portions near their distal ends are provided. The lengths and/or curvatures of the curved portions are selected so that a catheter can be advanced through a brachiocephalic or left subclavian artery (BCA or LSC) to access the ascending or descending aorta (AA or DA), withdrawn therefrom, and simply rotated to access the AA or DA. Hence, the catheters provide access to both the AA and DA through the BCA or LSC without any need to withdraw the catheter from the BCA or LSC, e.g., so a second catheter can be exchanged for it. The catheter can further be advanced through the DA into the abdominal aorta and rotated to access branch arteries including the vessels of the lower extremities. The catheters are usable for flush aortography, arteriography, and intravascular pressure measurements, and can be introduced to the BCA or LSC via radial artery access.

Abstract: A vaginal device is described. A conformable vaginal insert is shaped for insertion into a vaginal cavity of a female human. A contact point is configured to change a shape of the insert. A sensor is configured to measure and to relay characteristics of the vaginal cavity and the surrounding and supportive structures of the vaginal cavity. A processor is configured to control the contact point to adjust the shape of the insert, generate a treatment for the vaginal cavity and the surrounding structures of the vaginal cavity and the supportive structures of the vaginal cavity comprising a vaginal cavity profile generated from the measured characteristics, store the measured characteristics and the vaginal cavity profile, and based on the stored measured characteristics and the stored vaginal cavity profile, automatically modify the shape of the insert by control of the contact point to provide the treatment to the vaginal cavity.

Abstract: A placement system for tracking, placing, and monitoring a catheter assembly or other medical device inserted into a body of a patient is disclosed. The placement system utilizes optical fiber-based strain sensors to assist with catheter placement. In one embodiment, the placement system comprises a console including a processor and a plurality of optical fiber-based strain sensors included with the catheter. A light source is also included and configured to operably connect with the strain sensors and produce outgoing optical signals incident on the strain sensors. A photodetector is included and configured to operably connect with the strain sensors and receive return optical signals from the strain sensors. A processor is configured to process data from the return optical signals. The data relates to an aspect of the catheter. A user interface such as a display is configured to communicate information relating to the aspect of the catheter.
