Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to providing an effective and reliable approach for cleaning an exposed surface of an imaging element (e.g., a lens) of apparatuses including but not limited to medical imaging instruments such as endoscopes and laparoscopes and the like. In the case of medical imaging instruments, cleaning apparatuses configured in accordance with embodiments the present invention can be cleaned while the distal end portion of the endoscope is in vivo. Such apparatuses have a cleaning member incorporated therein (e.g., a resilient polymeric wiper, a sponge, an absorbent pad or the like) that is used for cleaning the exposed surface of the imaging element. The apparatus is preferably adapted for being mounted on the imaging apparatus but can also be entirely or partially integral with one or more components of the imaging apparatus or system of which it is a component.

Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises an elongate probe, in which the probe comprises an endoscope and a treatment channel. In some embodiments, the endoscope comprises a lens, in which the treatment channel extends through the distal end of the lens, which can facilitate alignment of the probe with a target tissue. In some embodiments, the treatment channel and the endoscope may comprise a co-axial configuration, which can decrease parallax when a user views the distal end of the working channel and target tissue beyond the distal end. Alternatively, the probe may comprise lenses arranged to provide stereoscopic vision of the end of the probe. The treatment channel may comprise an optical fiber to deliver light energy or a working channel. The treatment channel may comprise a housing such as a tube extending from the endoscope, in which the endoscope is configured to image the end of the treatment channel.

Abstract: In a method of using a structured-light based system, real-time 2D images of a portion of a field of view are captured using an endoscope. A portion of an object in the field of view is illuminated with a structured light pattern, and light reflected from the field of view is detected.
From the reflected light, a 3D image of the field of view is constructed, and 3D locations of points on a surface of the object are determined. The real time 3D spatial position of the endoscope and/or a surgical tool is determined. If a distance between the surface the endoscope and/or surgical tool, as determined using the 3D spatial position, falls below a predetermined distance, an alert is generated to notify a user.-

Abstract: The necessary detector configuration and mathematical algorithms to implement a lateral (side-viewing) field of view in a gamma detection probe designed for laparoscopic use is disclosed. For this application, the diameter of the probe is limited to 12 mm. A hybrid collimation design, using a combination of both electronic collimation and metallic shielding, allows the probe to detect gamma emissions form 15 KeV-1.0 MeV. In the lower energy range, the 1.52 mm tungsten shielding is sufficient to collimate the primary detector. Two additional detectors are used to provide electronic collimation and depth detection. The upper energy limit of 1.0 MeV is imposed to exclude the possibility of electron-positron pair production which occurs at energies of 1.022 MeV and greater.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a reflux disease treatment apparatus, apparatus, comprising an implantable movement restriction device that maintains cardia in the correct position and an implantable stimulation device adapted to engage with the cardia sphincter of a patient. The invention further comprises a control device for controlling the stimulation device to stimulate the cardia sphincter. The invention can be combined with various methods for treating obesity, in particular methods that creates satiety by stretching the wall of the stomach or fills out a volume of the stomach.

Abstract: A robotic surgical system in which the system applies a scaling factor between user input from a user input device and corresponding movements of the robotic manipulator. Scaling factors may be applied or adjusted based on detected conditions such as the type of instrument being manipulated, detected distance between multiple instruments being manipulated, user biometric parameters.

Abstract: Apparatus and techniques described herein can include delivery of a surgical laser beam for tissue excision or to facilitate hemostasis. The surgical laser beam can be generated, for example, using an ultrafast laser source. Such an approach can provide non-invasive treatment in relation to, for example, aerodigestive anatomy, such as for treatment of laryngeal, oropharyngeal, bronchial, and oral cavity tissues. Other generally available laser sources and their associated treatments may present various drawbacks making them less suitable for treatment for laryngeal, pharyngeal or bronchial pathologies, and use of the apparatus and techniques described herein can address such drawbacks.
