A brake apply system includes a pressure charging module having a bore carrying a pumping piston that has a base piston surface and an augmentation piston surface. The pressure charging piston separates the bore into an input chamber adjacent the base piston surface and an output chamber adjacent the augmentation piston surface. A suspension damper is hydraulically connected to the input chamber of the pressure charging module, preferably through a continuously open fluid communication circuit. A wheel brake is hydraulically connected to the accumulator output chamber through a selectively open fluid communication circuit. An accumulator is interconnected in the selectively open fluid communication circuit and maintains a pressure charge that is generated by movement of the pumping piston as effected by operation of the damper and that is delivered to the wheel brake through the selectively open fluid communication circuit Through this mechanism the initial pressurization rate of the brake apply system is increased.

In a brake-pressure control device for a road vehicle having a hydraulic two-circuit brake system with front-axle/rear-axle brake circuit distribution, an anti-lock brake system (ABS) operates according to the recirculation principle and a device for dynamic movement control (FDR) requires the wheel brakes to be individually capable of automatic activation. The recirculation pumps of the ABS are utilized as pressure sources. The recirculation pump of the rear-axle brake circuit is constructed as a self-priming pump while the recirculation pump of the front-axle brake circuit is constructed as a non-self priming pump. The minimum pressure which is required for the input supply of the non-self priming pump is produced by a precharging cylinder which is connected between the main cylinder of the brake system and the ABS hydraulic unit. This precharging cylinder has a hydraulic or pneumatic drive cylinder for whose pressure supply a built-in hydraulic or pneumatic pressure source, e.g. the permanently driven supply pump of a ride leveller or the pressure supply pump of a pneumatic suspension, is used.

Load transfer apparatus for resisting the effects of brake torque on a tandem axle suspension system in a vehicle comprises air pressure apparatus adapted to inject a predetermined air pressure into an air spring over the rearmost axle whenever actuated and to relieve the pressure in the air spring whenever deactuated; and a control device adapted to sense the braking force applied to the wheels and actuate the air pressure apparatus when the braking force reaches a predetermined level. The control device also deactuates this air pressure apparatus when the braking force or speed of the vehicle drops to a predetermined level. Braking force can be measured as a function of the rate of wheel deceleration, and an anti-wheel lock control device can be employed for this purpose. Alternatively, braking force can be measured as a function of brake pressure.

A suspension assembly for a vehicle is provided that includes a frame supporting upper and lower control arms in spaced relation to one another that are pivotally connected to the frame. A steering knuckle is supported between the control arms and supports a wheel. The orientation of the knuckle defines the wheel attitude, which includes caster, camber, toe, and track. The knuckle is rotated about its axis in response to mechanical inputs from a steering wheel. First and second actuators may be supported on one of the control arms and connected to a portion of the knuckle. A third actuator may be supported on the other control arm and connected to another portion of the knuckle. At least one sensor detects vehicle ride conditions such as braking, vehicle yaw, and steering position. A controller is connected to the sensors and the actuators to command the actuators to adjust at least one of the caster, camber, toe, and track in response to the vehicle ride conditions.
