An electrohydraulic device for controlling clutch engagement in motor vehicles and the like, incorporating a hydraulic actuator having the rod of its piston connected to the clutch lever, a hydraulic circuit for controlling the hydraulic actuator via an interceptor mechanism, an electronic control unit which causes the interceptor mechanism to feed the hydraulic actuator and thereby cause clutch release, as well as to enable the hydraulic actuator to discharge, and at least one solenoid valve connected to the discharge circuit of the hydraulic actuator which is caused to open by the electronic control unit due to a sequence of electronic pulses related to the rotational speed of the vehicle engine. The command to the interceptor mechanism is provided by the electronic control unit automatically when predetermined engine operating conditions exist or by the action of the driver. A control hydraulic actuator, is situated between the interceptor mechanism and the hydraulic actuator, downstream of a relative piston. The relative piston involves an opposing spring for adjusting its working stroke according to the engagement stroke of the clutch. A line is communicatively interposed between the hydraulic circuit connecting the hydraulic actuator and an outer hydraulic circuit which acts when the clutch is in the engagement position.

A soft start controller for regulating the engagement and disengagement of an electromagnetic clutch is disclosed. The controller includes a microprocessor which, in response to an engagement signal, causes electrical current to be provided to a coil of the clutch. A plurality of sensors are provided for generating electrical signals which are representative of various operating conditions of the clutch, such as engine load, clutch temperature and the like. These signals are selectively fed through a multiplexer and an analog to digital converter to the microprocessor. The microprocessor samples the signals generated by the sensors and controls the magnitude of the current fed to the coil of the clutch in response thereto. A plurality of manually operable start select switches are provided for selecting one of a plurality of clutch current curves stored in a memory of the microprocessor for use. Alternatively, the microprocessor may be programmed to select one of the clutch current curves in accordance with the sensed operating conditions. The microprocessor may also be responsive to the sensed operating conditions for automatically engaging or disengaging the clutch under certain conditions.

A vehicle such as an earthmoving wheel loader has an engine, a torque converter having an impeller element, a reactor element and a turbine element, and an input clutch connected between the engine and the impeller element. An electrohydraulic control device is provided to controllably engage the input clutch and that includes a microprocessor-based electronic control module, an actuator mechanism having a control member that is progressively movable between first, second and third positions to deliver a first electrical signal to the electronic control module, and a valve for directing fluid to the input clutch at a decreasing pressure level when the control member is moved from the first to the second positions in response to another signal from the electronic control module. The electronic control module is programmed to maintain at least a minimal pressure level to the actuating piston of the input clutch when the control member is between the second and third positions. Moreover, a service brake is increasingly engaged by a service brake mechanism in response to the control member moving between the second and third positions. Other logic functions are included to control the input clutch and a lockup clutch connected between the engine and the turbine element.

An improved hydraulic clutch engagement system for use in a drag racing motor vehicle provides automatic engagement of the clutch for launching the car at the start of a race, without sacrificing manual control of the clutch necessary for power staging the car at the starting line prior to the race. A clutch assembly is movable between engaged and disengaged positions, wherein the car is driven when the clutch assembly is engaged. A slave cylinder is mounted adjacent to the clutch assembly. Main and return fluid lines extend between and flowingly connect the slave cylinder to a master cylinder. A pedal is operatively connected to the master cylinder for manually controlling the clutch assembly through displacement of a hydraulic fluid. A normally-closed solenoid valve is incorporated into the return line. A push button activated control device automatically electrically controls movement of the solenoid valve between its closed and open positions, and simultaneously controls locking and release of the vehicle brakes, respectively. Before the race, the brakes are locked and the clutch is disengaged due to the presence of hydraulic fluid in the slave cylinder caused by depressing the clutch pedal. When the race start is signalled, the push button is released which automatically disengages the brakes and opens the solenoid valve to release the fluid through the return line, which automatically relieves the hydraulic pressure in the slave cylinder causing the clutch assembly to engage, without removing manual control of the clutch assembly from the vehicle driver.

A rear wheel drive vehicle is converted to a four-wheel drive vehicle by operation of a hydraulically operated clutch which is controlled by a hydraulic valve. The hydraulic valve is spring biased to a clutch disengaged position and is hydraulically actuated to its clutch engaged position through operation of a pilot valve circuit which includes an electrically operated solenoid valve. The pilot valve circuit includes a flow restrictor providing modulated flow thereby affording a controlled pressure rise in the clutch whereby a smooth engagement of the front wheel drive is achieved.

A pressure limiting arrangement is disclosed for automatically reestablishing full clutch engagement pressure to a hydraulic pressure actuated clutch of a vehicle whenever the operator, by the manipulation of an inching valve, attempts to slip the clutch above a predetermined partial engagement pressure and includes a mechanical biasing device connected to the inching valve and effective in overriding the manual control thereof to shift the valve to its full clutch engaging position, an actuator connected for effecting the disengagement of the biasing device to allow normal operation of the valve, and a control system to effect the selective operation of the actuator and including a first device responsive to a predetermined application of the manual control member of the valve to effect the initial disengagement of the biasing device and a second device responsive to the predetermined partial clutch engagement pressure to effect the reengagement of the mechanical biasing device.
