An apparatus is provided for forming an outwardly-rolled lip on an open end of a deformable cylindrical container body. The apparatus may include a mandrel having a generally cylindrical-shaped portion for movably supporting at least a portion of an interior surface of the container body. The apparatus further includes a lip-forming die assembly forming a part of the mandrel and having an annular cavity defining an open mouth portion and a closed bottom portion which defines a surface area extending generally radially outwardly of the mandrel outer surface and which is oriented with the open mouth portion generally transverse to an outer periphery of the container body and which faces the open end of the container body around the periphery. An axial forcing member contacts the other end of the container body for axially moving the container body along the outer surface of the mandrel and the container open end into and through the die assembly. The cavity bottom portion surface area of the lip-forming die assembly has a generally C-shaped cross-sectional contour in the direction of its outward extension which includes a combination of curved and straight sections positioned at predetermined radii and angles to a longitudinal axis of the container body, so that, when the outer periphery of the open end of the container body is forced into and through the die assembly to form the outwardly-rolled lip, the end of the container body will contact only a part of the bottom portion surface area of the die cavity to reduce frictional engagement and to minimize the force necessary to move the end of the container body through the die.

An applicator is disclosed for inserting a substance into a body cavity. An apparatus for coating paper and a method of forming the paper into an applicator are also disclosed. The applicator is especially useful for inserting a catamenial tampon into a woman's vagina. The applicator includes a tubular member formed from at least one layer of paper which has an exterior surface. The tubular member is capable of holding the substance which is to be inserted. The exterior surface of the tubular member is coated with a water-insoluble coating which is comprised of from between about 95 to about 98 percent by weight of a polymeric material and from between about 2 to about 5 percent by weight of a slip agent. The coating provides the tubular member with a dry coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.35 to about 0.56 and a wet coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.78 to about 1.06. These low dry and wet coefficient of kinetic friction values facilitates insertion of the applicator into the body cavity.

An apparatus and a process for bonding a cardboard blank which has been coated or laminated with a plastic film, and particularly for hinge-lid packets such as cigarette packets on a continuously operated packing machine. The plastic film and a portion of the underlying cardboard material are first treated to expose a more suitable surface for bonding. Preferably, such treatment is by contacting with an apparatus which penetrates the plastic coating and creates depressions in the underlying cardboard. Subsequently, an adhesive is applied to the treated surface. The treated surface is compressed with the complementary area of the cardboard blank to be bonded. The apparatus of the invention comprises a heatable member whose contact surface may be comprised several rows of juxtaposed points or tips which may be approximately 1 to 5 mm in height.

A method for economically manufacturing a water-resistant paper container having a thermoplastic film coating on the inner and/or outer wall surfaces by means of an ultrasonic wave welding technique. The paper container can be economically manufactured by the utilization of an ultrasonic wave welding technique without the use of any adhesive. According to the method of the present invention, a bottom panel and a body member can be interruptedly joined together at the interface between the panel and the container body. As a result, the inner wall surface of the container can be easily and rapidly lined with a thermoplastic film by a known method. Furthermore, according to the present invention, a container mouth edge which is capable of resisting to any deforming stress can be formed.

An apparatus and method for flame treating paperboard. A plurality of burners are mounted to a flame and are positioned to have continuous flames extending therefrom toward the paperboard. Each burner is hollow and is connected to a source of gas/air mixture. The gas is mixed with sufficient air prior to ignition to insure complete combustion. Each flame has an intense and lean characteristic with the flame either impinging or spaced from the paperboard. A plurality of air curtains are positioned to convey away combustion by-products of those flames which have a downward orientation.
