Movable units are spaced apart along the path and are driven by drive units, one for each movable unit, longitudinally of the film webs. Control switches, one for each movable unit, works on each drive unit to move the corresponding movable unit for position adjustment. The film webs are processed by at least some of the movable units whenever being fed intermittently, to successively make the plastic bags.

An ultrasonic sealing device for a top fin of a gable-topped carton includes two jaws consisting of a jaw (2) with a planar active face and constituting the outer end portion of an ultrasonic horn (A1) and a jaw (6) constituting an anvil and having an active surface (10) which is planar except for upper and lower linear ribs (12) and (14) each extending the length of the surface (10). The lower rib (14) is linear and horizontal except for an upwardly bowed middle portion (16). The two jaws (2) and (6) serve to render gas-and-liquid tight a top fin of a conventional, plastics-coated paperboard, gable-top carton. The ribs (12) and (14) produce, in the outer surface of one of the outer sealing panels of the fin, corresponding furrows which extend over the whole length of the fin at levels where the inner sealing panels are sandwiched between the outer sealing panels, so as to seal the top fin in a gas- and liquid-tight manner along its whole length.

The anvil (56) is disposed on one side of a carton pathway (32) and moveably attached to the frame (52). The ultrasonic horn (54) is disposed on another side of the carton pathway (32) opposite the anvil (56) and moveably attached to the frame (52). The plurality of adjustable shafts (60-65) includes a first plurality of adjustable shafts (60,61) connected to the frame (52), and allowing for vertical adjustment of the frame (52) relative to the carton pathway (32). It also includes a second plurality of adjustable shafts (62,63) connected to the frame (52) and allowing for transversal adjustment of the frame (52) relative to the carton pathway (32). Optimal tightness of the filled folded-carton packages (1) is achieved by position-acquisition of the longitudinal seam (2) of every folded-carton package (1) in relation to the cell transporting this folded-carton package (1), alignment of the anvil across the direction of transport of the folded-carton packages (1) until the recess for the longitudinal seam (2) matches the actual position of the longitudinal seam (2) of the next folded-carton package (1) to be closed, and sealing and folding over the gable seam (8) or the ridge seam respectively. A sealing apparatus for packaging containers includes an anvil (23) for supporting a sealing fin portion (21), a horn (35) composed of a columnar portion and a converging portion (35b), and means for pressing said sealing fin portion (21) against the anvil (23) through the tip of the horn (35) and for transmitting ultrasonic vibration to the sealing fin portion (21). Ultrasonic vibration is transmitted to the packaging material through the horn (35) so that each pair of opposing sealant layers is fused and sealed. In addition, means for absorbing ultrasonic vibration is disposed between the tip of the horn (35) and an edge portion (25) of the sealing fin portion (21) so that ultrasonic vibration is absorbed. When the ultrasonic vibration is transmitted to the sealing fin portion (21), the sealing fin portion (21) is excited to transmit the vibration toward the edge portion (25). However, since the ultrasonic vibration is absorbed by the means for absorbing ultrasonic vibration, the ultrasonic vibration is not transmitted to the edge portion (25). Accordingly, it is possible to prevent the generation of dust from an end surface of the paper substrate which is exposed at the edge portion (25) of the sealing fin portion (21).

A gable top carton employs a stake joint having spaced apart legs disposed longitudinally on opposite sides of a channel, the channel being formed when a carton blank is folded to form the gable top carton. The spaced apart legs urge the material at the sides of the channel toward the center of the channel to effect a channel seal. The stake seal may be in the form of an inverted U-shaped stake seal. A method and apparatus for forming the stake seal are also contemplated.
