Abstract: An organic compound represented by general formula (1) is a novel organic compound having an absorption band in the near infrared region, and is useful for infrared absorbing dyes, optical films, and organic electronic devices such as photoelectric conversion elements, wherein R1 to R18 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, an aryl group, a heteroaryl group, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group, a mercapto group, an alkylthio group, a nitro group, a substituted amino group, an amide group, an acyl group, a carboxyl group, an acyloxy group, a cyano group, a sulfo group, a sulfamoyl group, an alkylsulfamoyl group, a carbamoyl group, or an alkylcarbamoyl group; and X represents a substituted or unsubstituted methine group, a silylidyne group, a germylidyne group, a stannylidyne group, a nitrogen atom, a phosphorus atom, an arsenic atom, or an antimony atom.

Abstract: Described herein are novel azo-benzene type chromophores. The chromophores are useful in photochromic compositions comprising a polymer matrix and a chromophore, wherein the chromophore is a novel azo-benzene type structure. The photochromic composition is photoresponsive upon irradiation by at least one wavelength of laser light across the visible light spectrum. Photochromic devices which comprise the novel azo-benzene type chromophore compound show significantly higher photoinduced birefringence, higher diffraction efficiency, and brighter images than devices that comprise well known azo-benzene chromophores. The photochromic composition may include a liquid crystal.

Abstract: The present invention is to provide: a photosensitive composition for volume hologram recording and a photosensitive substrate for volume hologram recording, which provide increased sensitivity during hologram recording and a high refractive index modulation amount, and which do not inhibit the decolorization of the sensitizing dye; and a volume hologram recorded medium which provides high-luminance hologram images with increased productivity. Disclosed is a photosensitive composition for volume hologram recording, comprising: a photopolymerizable monomer, a photopolymerization initiator, a sensitizing dye for sensitizing the photopolymerization initiator, a binder resin, and a thiol group-containing compound, wherein the photopolymerizable monomer contains a photoradically polymerizable monomer and a photocationically polymerizable monomer; wherein the thiol group-containing compound is a chain transfer agent for the photoradically polymerizable monomer and is a polyfunctional secondary thiol compound having two or more secondary thiol groups per molecule; and wherein the content of the thiol group-containing compound is 1.5 to 30 parts by mass with respect to 100 parts by mass of the photoradically polymerizable monomer.

Abstract: The present invention provides a fast-response photorefractive polymer element (1) including two insulating substrates (2, 2) arranged substantially in parallel with each other, ITO electrodes (3, 3) provided on inner surfaces (2a, 2a) of two insulating substrates (2, 2), dark current control layers (4, 4) provided on inner surfaces (3a, 3a) of ITO electrodes (3, 3), and a photorefractive composite material (5) provided between two insulating substrates (2, 2) with ITO electrodes (3, 3) and dark current control layers (4, 4). The photorefractive composite material (5) contains polytriarylamine (PTAA) which is a photorefractive polymer, and a dark current control layer (4) is a single-layered monomolecular film or multi-layered monomolecular films. With these configurations, a fast-response photorefractive polymer element achieves significantly improved responsiveness.
