A process for polymerizing olefins is disclosed. The process polymerizes an olefin in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst and an olefin polymerization catalyst. The dehydrogenation catalyst enables in-situ generation of alkenes from oligomers or solvent. The alkenes are then incorporated into the polyolefin. The polyolefin should have increased long-chain branching and lower density without the use of expensive comonomers.

The present invention relates to a process of conducting research using combinatorial techniques wherein metal-ligand compositions are synthesized and screened for reactivity in reactions of interest, particularly metal-ligand compounds which are suitable for use as catalysts. In the process, an array of different metal-ligand compositions is prepared by delivering a dissolved, soluble metal precursor and a metal-binding ligand to each reaction vessel or well in the array, where they may optionally be combined with an activator and/or other additives. The resulting metal-ligand composition in each vessel is then screened for reactivity in a chemical reaction of interest, particularly for catalytic activity in a polymerization reaction.

By specifying a catalyst system (combination of catalyst and cocatalyst) which has high polymerization activity, a norbornene based addition (co)polymer is efficiently produced. Specifically, C5H5NiCH3(PPh3) as a catalyst and B(C6F5)3 as a cocatalyst are used for producing a norbornene based addition polymer. Furthermore, C5H5NiCH3(PPh3) as a catalyst and B(C6F5)3 as a cocatalyst are used for producing an addition copolymer of norbornene and norbornene carboxylic acid methyl ester.
