This lead-free glass composition is characterized by containing silver oxide, tellurium oxide and vanadium oxide, and further containing at least one compound selected from among yttrium oxide, lanthanum oxide, cerium oxide, erbium oxide, ytterbium oxide, aluminum oxide, gallium oxide, indium oxide, iron oxide, tungsten oxide and molybdenum oxide as an additional component, and in that the content values (mol %) of silver oxide, tellurium oxide and vanadium oxide satisfy the relationships Ag2O>TeO2≥V2O5 and Ag5O≤2V2O5 when calculated in terms of the oxides, and in that the content of TeO2 is 25-37 mol. %.

A new multi-component optical amplifier glass, composed of multiple glass formers has been developed which displays bandwidths significantly larger than currently possible using silica-based or phosphate based, erbium doped fibers. Initial results indicate that using this material, one could double the bandwidth of existing optical amplifiers. This greatly increased spectrum combined with higher emission cross sections and the ability to go to higher doping concentrations, compared with silica-based fibers, make this new optical amplifier very attractive for increasing the transmission capacity of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems using optical fibers.

The crystalline glass fibers are prepared by fiberizing a glass composition containing at least one of the metal oxides to form amorphous glass fibers; and then heat-treating the resulting glass fibers at an elevated oxidation temperature but below the liquidus temperature of the glass of the fibers to crystallize at least part of the amorphous glass.

The glasses are low-melting, have extremely high densities and refractive indices, and have excellent infrared transmission characteristics.
