Abstract: A method for forming a glass composite includes: providing a first glass member and a second glass member; activating at least a part of a surface of the first glass member to form a first activated surface, with unsaturated chemical bonds formed on the first activated surface of the first glass member; activating at least a part of a surface of the second glass member to form a second activated surface, with unsaturated chemical bonds on the second activated surface of the second glass member; and connecting at least partially the first glass member and the second glass member with each other on a contact interface at a contacting position of the first glass member and the second glass member to form the glass composite.

Abstract: A vehicular interior electrochromic mirror reflective element includes a planar rear interior mirror-shaped glass substrate and a planar front interior mirror-shaped glass substrate. The front glass substrate is shape cut from a planar glass sheet. A perimeter seal establishes an interpane cavity between the rear glass substrate and the planar glass sheet at a respective planar front glass substrate portion of the planar glass sheet. An electrochromic medium is disposed in the interpane cavity. With the rear glass substrate joined with the respective planar front glass substrate portion of the planar glass sheet via the perimeter seal, the planar glass sheet is shape cut at the respective planar front glass substrate portion and the circumferential perimeter cut edges of glass substrates are processed to provide a circumferential rounded perimeter edge of the vehicular interior electrochromic mirror reflective element having a radius of curvature of at least 2.5 mm.

Abstract: A glass unit according to the present invention includes a first glass plate, a second glass plate that is arranged facing the first glass plate with a predetermined interval therebetween and forms an internal space with the first glass plate, a sealing member that seals a gap at peripheral edges of the first glass plate and the second glass plate, and a plurality of spacers arranged between the first glass plate and the second glass plate. The internal space has been depressurized to a vacuum state, or a predetermined gas has been injected into the internal space. The first and second glass plates each have a thickness of 5 mm or less, the pitch of the spacers is 15 mm or more, and the difference between the height of the highest spacer and the height of the lowest spacer is 0.01 mm or less.

Abstract: A method of making a vacuum insulating panel, the vacuum insulating panel comprising a first glass substrate, a second glass substrate, a plurality of spacers provided in a gap between at least the first and second glass substrates, and a seal provided between at least the first and second glass substrates, the seal comprising a first seal layer and/or a second seal layer. The method may include laser heating, using a laser beam from a continuous wave near-IR laser, seal material in order to form the first seal layer; wherein the laser heating may include causing the laser beam to move at a lateral speed of from about 5-70 mm/second relative to the substrates and the first seal material so that the laser beam at least partially passes through at least one of the glass substrates and impinges upon at least the second seal layer in order to heat the second seal layer and fire and/or sinter the first seal material thereby forming the first seal layer.

Abstract: An assembly includes a plurality of partitions to partition an internal space, surrounded with a pair of glass substrates arranged to face each other and a the peripheral wall having a frame shape and provided between the pair of glass substrates, into an evacuation space and a ventilation space. The plurality of partitions includes a first partition and a second partition, of which lengths are defined in two different directions. An end of the second partition faces a side portion of the first partition with a predetermined gap left between them. A space between the end of the second partition and the side portion of the first partition constitutes an air passage to evacuate the evacuation space through an evacuation port. The second partition includes, at the end thereof, a swollen portion protruding toward the evacuation space at least along the width of the second partition.

Abstract: A vehicular variable reflectance mirror reflective element includes a rear glass substrate joined with a front glass sheet via a perimeter seal. An electrochromic medium disposed in an interpane cavity established between the rear glass substrate and the front glass sheet and bounded by the perimeter seal. With the rear glass substrate joined with the front glass sheet, the front glass sheet is cut at a front glass substrate portion to form a front glass substrate. A back plate is attached at the rear of the rear glass substrate. With the front glass sheet cut at the front glass substrate portions to form the front glass substrate having the rear glass substrate joined therewith via the perimeter seal, and with the back plate fixtured at a finishing tool, the cut edges of the front glass substrate are processed to provide a finished perimeter edge of the front glass substrate.
