Abstract: Disclosed is a modified carbonaceous material, which includes hexagonal carbon networks in a layered stacking structure and acidic functional groups bonded to the hexagonal carbon networks and mainly existing at edges of the layered carbonaceous structure. Accordingly, the close proximity of acid moiety at the edges can resemble the center of hydrolysis enzymes, resulting in enhancement of hydrolytic efficiency. Additionally, the acid-functionalized carbonaceous material can also be applied in the capture and storage of carbon dioxide due to its unexpectedly higher capacity for CO2 molecular.

Abstract: The present invention provides novel chromatographic materials, e.g., for chromatographic separations, processes for their preparation and separations devices containing the chromatographic materials. The preparation of the inorganic/organic hybrid materials of the invention wherein a surrounding material is condensed on a superficially porous hybrid core material will allow for families of different hybrid packing materials to be prepared from a single core hybrid material. Differences in hydrophobicity, ion-exchange capacity, chemical stability, surface charge or silanol activity of the surrounding material may be used for unique chromatographic separations of small molecules, carbohydrates, antibodies, whole proteins, peptides, and/or DNA.

Abstract: A process for removing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from a H2S-containing gas composition includes charging a liquid to a reactor under continuous agitation and dispersing particles of a graphene supported mixed-metal hydroxide composite in the liquid to form a graphene supported mixed-metal hydroxide composite mixture. The method further includes introducing the H2S-containing gas composition to the reactor containing the graphene supported mixed-metal hydroxide composite mixture under continuous agitation and passing the H2S-containing gas composition through the graphene supported mixed-metal hydroxide composite mixture. In addition, the method includes adsorbing the H2S from the H2S-containing gas composition onto the graphene supported mixed-metal hydroxide composite to remove the H2S from the H2S-containing gas composition and form a purified gas composition.

Abstract: A method of forming a product for separating gases includes forming a three-dimensional ceramic support, heating the three-dimensional ceramic support at a temperature for an effective duration of time to result in the conductive ceramic material having a plurality of intra-material pores, and incorporating a sorbent additive into the intra-material pores of the conductive ceramic material. Moreover, the three-dimensional ceramic support includes an electrically conductive ceramic material configured for joule heating.

Abstract: Polymer/carbon nanotube composites made up of melamine, aldehyde, diaminoalkane monomeric units and carbon nanotubes having activated carbonyl groups. A method for removing heavy metals, such as Pb(II) from an aqueous solution or an industrial wastewater sample with these composites is introduced. A process of synthesizing the polymer/carbon nanotube composites is also described.

Abstract: An adsorbent composition comprising particles consisting of a core which is at least partially coated with an adsorbent material is disclosed. The core is selected so that it has at least one of: (i) wear resistance; (ii) resistance to corrosive conditions; (iii) at least one thermoplastic material; and (iv) a low porosity. A suitable core material is polystyrene. Adsorbent materials suitable for the coating include activated carbon and metal oxides such as silica and alumina. The adsorbent composition may be used for the adsorption of metals and metal ions in ore processing, for instance for the separation of precious metals such as gold.
