In one of its aspects the invention is directed to rubber modified thermoplastic resin compositions comprising discontinuous elastomeric phase particles derived from a unitary rubber substrate having at least a bimodal particle size distribution, wherein the elastomeric phase particles comprise a polymer having structural units derived from at least one (C1-C12)alkyl(meth)acrylate monomer and are dispersed in a rigid thermoplastic phase, wherein at least a portion of the rigid thermoplastic phase is grafted as a shell to elastomeric phase core particles, and wherein the rigid thermoplastic phase comprises structural units derived from at least one vinyl aromatic monomer, at least one monoethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer and at least one (C1-C12)alkyl- or aryl-(meth)acrylate monomer. In another aspect the rigid thermoplastic phase of the compositions comprises a first thermoplastic phase at least a portion of which is grafted to the elastomeric phase; and a second thermoplastic phase comprising a polymer prepared separately in the absence of elastomeric phase and added to the composition.

An optoelectronic device assembly can comprise: a coated element and an electroactive cell on the coated element, wherein the electroactive cell is selected from the group consisting of a light emitting diode and a photovoltaic cell. The coated element can comprise: transparent thermoplastic substrate and a protective weathering layer. The transparent thermoplastic substrate can comprise a material selected from the group consisting of aromatic polycarbonate and polyester, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing materials. The protective weathering layer can have a UV absorbance loss rate at 330 nm of less than or equal to 0.15 A/year as estimated from filtered xenon arc exposure and/or having a rate of erosion of less than or equal to 5 μm per year as estimated from filtered xenon arc exposure.

A sheet material includes a polycarbonate substrate and a protective coating containing the reaction products of an aminoplast resin, a polyol compound, and a UV-absorbing amount of a triazine compound. The sheet material exhibits an improved balance of abrasion resistance, solvent resistance, weatherability, and formability.

A thermoplastic composition includes particular amounts of a poly(arylene ether), a hydrogenated block copolymer, a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefin, a plasticizer, a white pigment, and an ultraviolet radiation stabilizer. The composition exhibits excellent light stability, and it is particularly useful for forming white or off-white cable insulation.

A method for preparing novel dibenzoylresorcinol-based compounds is disclosed, wherein the dibenzoylresorcinol is bonded to a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group which does not include a pendent hydroxyl group. The groups attached to the dibenzoylresorcinol may contain a wide variety of functional sites which permit further reaction, e.g., copolymerization. The described compounds are very useful as UV light absorbers and may be used to form improved coating compositions which usually include a transparent, polymeric matrix material. The coating compositions may be applied to various substrates, e.g., thermoplastics, to afford a selection of enhanced properties, such as UV light resistance and abrasion resistance.

Disclosed are weatherable polyester soft block copolymer compositions comprising copolymers of resorcinol or alternatively phenol, aromatic dicarboxylic acid, and a aliphatic dicarboxylic acid based structural units. These polyester soft block copolymers comprise a substantial proportion of direct linkages between the resorcinol or alternatively the phenol, and the aromatic dicarboxylic acid based structural units, the balance of the linkages being between resorcinol and the aliphatic dicarboxylic acid based structural units.

The instant invention relates to weatherable polycarbonate compositions (formulations or blends) comprising piperazinone or piperazine dione based HALS. These piperazinone or piperazine dione based HALS impart photostability to the polycarbonate formulations, thereby reducing yellowing or other forms of light induced degradation.

The instant invention is directed to novel silylated agents having the formula ##STR1## where Ar and Ar' are independently substituted or unsubstituted aromatic rings, R is a branched or unbranched chain of 1 to 6 carbons, R' and R" are independently C1 to C12 alkyl or mixtures of C1 to C12 alkyl, and n is 1 or 2. The novel dibenzoylresorcinol silylated agents are capable of absorbing ultraviolet light.

A thermosetting polymer material capable of being used in powder coatings. The thermosetting polymer material includes at least one hydroxyl functional aliphatic polycarbonates that is formulated and crosslinked with isocyanates to yield a thermoset organic coating material. These materials provide improved weatherability as compared to prior art powder coating materials while also being less expensive than prior art materials utilizing fluorinated polymers.
