Abstract:
A sheet material includes a polycarbonate substrate and a protective coating containing the reaction products of an aminoplast resin, a polyol compound, and a UV-absorbing amount of a triazine compound. The sheet material exhibits an improved balance of abrasion resistance, solvent resistance, weatherability, and formability.
Abstract:
The instant invention is directed to novel silylated agents having the formula ##STR1## where Ar and Ar' are independently substituted or unsubstituted aromatic rings, R is a branched or unbranched chain of 1 to 6 carbons, R' and R" are independently C1 to C12 alkyl or mixtures of C1 to C12 alkyl, and n is 1 or 2. The novel dibenzoylresorcinol silylated agents are capable of absorbing ultraviolet light.

Abstract:
Thermoplastic substrates subject to color instability and loss of physical properties resulting from exposure to ultraviolet radiation, such as polycarbonate, are coated with a protective coating comprising at least one thermoplastic acrylic polymer such as poly(methyl methacrylate) in combination with two ultraviolet absorbing compounds: a substituted resorcinol such as 4,6-dibenzoylresorcinol and a silylated substituted resorcinol such as 2-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)-4,6-dibenzoylresorcinol. The silylated substituted resorcinol is used in a minor proportion effective to improve solubility and compatibility of the substituted resorcinol.
Abstract:
An epoxylated DBR, dibenzoylresorcinol and various derivatives thereof have been prepared to show usefulness in coatings due to compatibility and solubility. Such coatings can be acrylics, epoxies, or silicone hardcoats which are thermally or photo cured thermoset, or thermoplastic coating materials in a variety of solvent types. The disclosed UV absorber also has the advantage of a higher molecular weight and lower volatility than DBR alone thus providing processing advantages.
Abstract:
Novel dibenzoylresorcinol-based compounds are disclosed wherein the dibenzoylresorcinol is bonded to the residue of either an alcohol or a carboxylic acid group, via a methylene carboxylate linking group; and wherein the dibenzoylresorcinol is bonded directly to a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group which does not include a pendent hydroxyl group. The groups attached to the dibenzoylresorcinol may contain a wide variety of functional sites which permit further reaction, e.g., copolymerization. The described compounds are very useful as UV light absorbers and may be used to form improved coating compositions which usually include a transparent, polymeric matrix material. The coating compositions may be applied to various substrates, e.g., thermoplastics, to afford a selection of enhanced properties, such as UV light resistance and abrasion resistance.
Abstract:
The present invention provides the discovery of an improved radiation curable coating composition comprising at least one acrylic monomer, a photoinitiator, and an ultraviolet light absorber selected from triazine or a dibenzoyl resorcinol derivative or a mixture thereof, the dibenzoyl resorcinol derivative having the formula ##STR1## where Ar and Ar' are independently substituted or unsubstituted monocyclic or polycyclic aryl groups and R' is H or a linear or branched alkyl chain having less than about 10 carbons bearing a --Si(OR.sup.2).sub.3, where R.sup.2 is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl group.
