Abstract:
Embodiments of the present application generally provide for wind turbine blade spar caps comprising composite materials prepared using a low viscosity resin system and a high density fabric and methods for their manufacture. In particular embodiment, the low viscosity resin system has a viscosity in the range of about 1 to about 100 centipoises at a temperature in the range of about 0° C. to about 125° C. during the preparation of the composite material. By using low viscosity resin systems, composite materials have been prepared having a fiber volume fraction of greater than about 65% and a composite modulus of greater than 48000 MPa.

The coating may include polyvinyl nucleophilic polymer and a urethane or a blocked isocyanate. The coating may be cross-linked. Also provided is a method of making the membrane.
Abstract:
A coating composition comprising components A, B and optionally C, wherein component A comprises at least one carboxy-terminated polyarylate. Component B is an organic species which can react with the terminal carboxy groups of component A, and component C is a catalyst or mixture of catalysts. The carboxy-terminated polyarylates are prepared by a solution polymerization method wherein a stoichiometric excess of a diacid chloride is reacted with a dihydroxy-substituted aromatic compound (e.g. resorcinol) in the presence of an organic base and a limited amount of water to produce an initially formed polyarylate comprising anhydride linkages. The initially formed polyarylate is then subjected to selective hydrolysis of the anhydride linkages to provide a low molecular weight carboxy-terminated polyarylate.
Abstract:
Thermosets are formed by mixing an epoxy resin with a hardener composition that includes a norbornene-based anhydride hardener such as methyl nadic anhydride and a core-shell rubber. The presence of the core-shell rubber unexpectedly reduces the strong odor of that is normally produced in thermosets containing these anhydride hardeners.
Abstract:
An automated in-line feed-through system integrating the delivery, application and infusion of a resin to one or more fiber tows and layup of the one or more infused fiber tows to form a composite structure. The system includes an automated resin delivery, deposition and infusion system configured to deposit the resin on a respective one of the one or more fiber tows and form the infused fiber tows. The system integrates an automated layup system including a compaction roller configured to adhere the one or more infused fiber tows to a substrate. The system further includes a controller configured to control a flow rate of the resin, control the temperature of the resin, the infused fiber tows and the automated layup system, and control tension of the one or more infused fiber tows within the automated layup system. Other aspects of the automated in-line system are also provided.
Abstract:
A thermosetting polymer material capable of being used in powder coatings. The thermosetting polymer material includes at least one hydroxyl functional aliphatic polycarbonates that is formulated and crosslinked with isocyanates to yield a thermoset organic coating material. These materials provide improved weatherability as compared to prior art powder coating materials while also being less expensive than prior art materials utilizing fluorinated polymers.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to films which are coated with at least two paint coats (2) (3), whereby the backing film (1) is coated with at least one radiation-hardenable paint coat (2) and at least one second paint coat (3), which can harden at least partially without radiation. The invention also relates to a method for producing said films and to their use for coating steel, aluminium and plastic substrates.
Abstract:
A coated fiber comprising an inner fiber comprising an aramid and an outer coating comprising a polyamic acid or a polyetherimide deposited on the inner fiber is provided. The outer coating comprising the polyamic acid may be subjected to curing to form a polyetherimide coating. Also provided are methods for making the coated fiber wherein the coated fiber comprises an inner fiber comprising an aramid and an outer coating comprising a polyamic acid or a polyetherimide.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are polyarylate acid chloride compositions derived from aromatic diacid chlorides and dihydroxy aromatic compounds that are made by reacting a stoichiometric excess of said aromatic diacid chlorides with the dihydroxy aromatic compounds. Disclosed also are a wide variety of compositions derived from said polyarylate acid chlorides. In one instance new compositions are prepared by reacting the polyarylate acid chlorides with a nucleophile containing carboxylate functionality to provide an acid end-capped polyarylate. Alternately, the polyarylate acid chlorides may be hydrolyzed to provide carboxylate end-capped polyarylates. Disclosed further are methods to make described compositions.
