Abstract: An autonomous vehicle includes a sensor detecting an object in a vicinity of the autonomous vehicle, a processor coupled to the sensor to receive sensor data from the sensor, wherein the processor is configured to process the sensor data to recognize that the object is a pedestrian or cyclist. The processor cooperates with the sensor to track the pedestrian or cyclist. The processor determines if the pedestrian or cyclist satisfies a notification criterion and, upon determining that the pedestrian or cyclist satisfies the notification criterion, the processor outputs an illumination signal. A light projector receives the illumination signal and projects a beam of light onto a portion of a road on which the pedestrian or cyclist is currently situated to visually notify the pedestrian or cyclist that the autonomous vehicle is presently tracking the pedestrian or cyclist.

At least one aspect of the environment of the vehicle that is not observed by the one or more sensors could be inferred based on the sensor data. The vehicle could be controlled in the autonomous mode based on the at least one inferred aspect of the environment of the vehicle.

Abstract: During a period from when an automated driving vehicle starts pulling over to a sidewalk side until the vehicle pulls over completely thereto, an operation control section causes the vehicle to immediately stop when an object that can be an obstacle exists in at least one of a middle front area, a sidewalk-side front area, and a sidewalk-side side area that are areas each within a predetermined distance at a middle front, at a sidewalk-side front, and on a sidewalk-side side of the vehicle, respectively. During the period, the operation control section does not cause the vehicle to stop when the object does not exist in any of the middle front area, the sidewalk-side front area, and the sidewalk-side side area, even when the object exists in an area surrounding the vehicle other than the middle front area, the sidewalk-side front area, and the sidewalk-side side area.

Abstract: A rule violation leading to a traffic conflict involving a vehicle and at least one agent in real-time driving scenarios, simulation, re-simulation or other application is determined to be the fault of the vehicle by determining whether the situation was “reasonably foreseeable,” determining whether the at least one agent is a vulnerable road user (VRU) and determining whether the at least one agent violated a higher priority rule than the rule violated by the vehicle. In an embodiment, on-vehicle decisions are based on a rulebook with a priority structure that accounts for responsibility and determines an “initiator” of the traffic conflict based on whether the vehicle or the at least one agent was the first to violate a rule and the first to violate a higher priority rule.
