A plurality of insulator samples of different dimensions are subjected to multiple regression analysis to thereby induce an expression for estimating the amount of unevenness in wall thickness of an insulator; specifically, 0.01 (17.527+0.141A−0.285B−6.124C−0.14D+1.105E), where A is an overall length of the insulator, B is the outside diameter of a rear trunk portion of the insulator, C is the diameter of a large diameter portion of the axial bore of the insulator, D is the length of the large diameter portion of the bore, and E is the diameter of a small diameter portion of the axial bore. The insulator is designed such that the amount of unevenness in wall thickness thereof estimated through calculation by this expression is less than 0.07 mm.

The device for this is a grinding machine (15) with a grooved roller (21) to grind the prefabricated concrete part at functionally relevant points to a predetermined size. The grooved roller (21) is made of a wear resistant material, especially silicon carbide.

An apparatus for cutting grooves in a green concrete slab having at least one terminating side edge transverse to a broad top surface in a low cost manner is described and includes the following elements: a hand-held portable rotary saw, supported on a rollable platform disconnectably connected to and supporting the relative to the green concrete slab. The rollable platform includes a planar base in surface contact with a conventional guide plate of the saw, and flared side walls extending outwardly from the planar base an anchoring portion adapted to receive a human-generated force to provide rectilinear travel along a preselected direction over the green concrete slab. The planar base also includes a slot in alignment with an opening in the guide plate through which the saw blade extends whereby a working plane of reference is defined that intersects an axis of rotation of the saw blade whereby a maximum depth of cut is easily defined coincident with the working plane of reference. The rollable platform also includes a set of rollers in rolling contact with the green concrete slab to facilitate the rectilinear travel wherein first and second pairs of rollers define parallel axes of rotation normal to said pre-selected direction of travel that facilitate operations in a low cost manner.

A method for manufacturing a hinged sheet having an inorganically filled structural matrix includes mixing together a water-dispersible organic polymer binder, an inorganic aggregate material, a fibrous material, and water in order to form a moldable inorganically filled mixture in which the components therein are substantially homogeneously dispersed. The inorganically filled mixture is formed into a substantially hardened sheet having an inorganically filled matrix in a manner such that the water is removed by evaporation. The sheet is then scored to form a hinge in the inorganically filled matrix. Alternatively, a score can be pressed into a surface of the sheet prior to drying in order to form a scored sheet which is then dried. A hinged article having an inorganically filled structural matrix can also be formed by molding the inorganically filled mixture into an article in a manner such that the article includes at least one part that is hingedly attached to at least one other part by a hinge which defines an area of reduced thickness.

A rotating cutting blade and its drive motor are mounted on a wheeled support platform. The blade extends through a skid plate depending from the platform, in order to cut the concrete below the skid plate. The slot in the skid plate has its ends configured to fit within predetermined distances of the corresponding ends of cutting segments on the cutting blade. The cutting segments are configured to have a generally inverted "T" configuration in which a central cutting segment extends radially outward from two cutting segments located on opposite sides of the central segment. The exterior edges of the cutting segments may be square or rounded. The juncture between the central and shoulder segments may be square or rounded. The concrete is advantageously cut before it hardens to 1200 psi, without the use of an added lubricant, or above that hardness with lubricant if the cutting blade is supported within a sufficiently close distance by a skid plate.

Cellular lightweight concrete slabs are manufactured by cutting a still plastic block of cellular concrete mass resting on a first support horizontally into slices which are then moved over one by one to a second support and piled in reversed order thereon, at least one of the two broadsides of each body slice being subjected to a treatment before being covered by the next transferred slice. The treatment prevents the body slices from cementing together during the subsequent steam-hardening process and may also improve the quality of the slabs when hardened. An apparatus for such manufacture features a movable suction head for transferring the body slices as well as associated means for cutting and treating said slices.
