    Abstract: In one embodiment, physical layer error signatures of a communications link are determined by ascertaining characteristics of erred and correct modulation symbols received by a physical receiver of a communications device, such as, but not limited to, by a receiver of a packet switching device in a communications network normally used to receive data traffic. In one embodiment, a physical receiver of a physical communications device receives a particular modulation symbol and determines whether the received particular modulation symbol is an expected modulation symbol in a predetermined sequence of modulation symbols. One or more storage devices are maintained with one or more error signature measurements based on determining whether the particular modulation symbol is the expected modulation symbol in the predetermined sequence of modulation symbols, with the error signature measurements including performing a comparison to a threshold value or a current maximum value.

    Abstract: A plurality of units have a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter puts the unit's own data string into a coding data array using first array information, and calculates an error-correcting code based on the data array in which 0 is put except for the data string. The receiver decodes a data array in which a data string is put into the coding data array based on second array information, using an error-correcting code. The transmitter adds the unit's own data string to a data string, puts the unit's own data string into the coding data array using the first array information on the data string, calculates an error-correcting code for the data array in which 0 is put except for the data string, and determines an error-correcting code of a transmission packet by addition of an error-correcting code of a received packet and the calculated error-correcting code.

    Abstract: Communication apparatus includes a PHY interface, which is configured to receive over a communication link and to decode a sequence of symbols arranged in a series of data blocks. The PHY interface includes an error correction circuit, which when actuated, corrects errors in decoded data symbols using FEC symbols in the data blocks. The decoded data include data packets containing respective error detection codes. A memory buffers the data blocks received by the PHY interface. A data link layer interface receives the data packets from the PHY interface, checks the data packets using respective error detection codes, and upon detecting an error in a given data packet, signals the PHY interface to read from the memory at least one buffered data block that contains the given data packet while actuating the error correction circuit to correct the error using the FEC symbols in the at least one buffered data block.
