Abstract:
Aqueous microemulsions are described which are polymerized to produce a latex containing particles of organic polymer having recurring pendant perfluorinated organic side chains which have an average particle size of between 0.01 and 0.5 micrometers. The latex can be used to coat the surface of substrate structures, or to coat the pore walls of porous substrate structures.
Abstract:
A method of imparting stain resistance to colored substrates which include a filamentary material is disclosed. A first dispersion of a polymer is applied to the filamentary material as a finish during the manufacture of the filamentary material, and a second dispersion of a polymer is applied as an overspray after the filamentary material has been formed into a colored substrate, to achieve at least 300 ppm fluorine from each application on the filamentary material (at least 600 ppm fluorine total). Fluorinated-alkyl sulfides represented by [R.sub.f (CH.sub.2).sub.n S].sub.z Q where R.sub.f is fluoroalkyl, n is 2 or 3, z is 1 or 2, and Q is an aryl, alkylaryl, alkyl heterocyclic or heterocyclic radical, are useful as surfactants or as intermediates for the preparation of salt-type, quaternary-salt, or amphoteric surfactants.
Abstract:
A fabric treatment composition is provided that includes at least one zeta potential modifier, a fluoropolymer and a hydrophobic agent with a melting point or glass transition temperature below 100° C., for imparting fabric protection benefits to a fabric, such as improved stain and soil resistance, oil repellency, water repellency, softness, wrinkle and damage resistance, and better hand feel. Fabric treatment compositions can be used as a pretreatment prior to washing, through soaking, or added to the treatment liquor, that is either the wash or rinse cycle of an automatic washing machine, to first provide and then maintain and refresh the fabric protection benefits imparted to the fabric, with the proviso that an intermediate rinsing step essentially devoid of added surfactant-is used after the washing cycle and prior to the fabric treatment step. Following use of a first treatment composition, protective benefits are maintained and refreshed by means of a second treatment operation employing a second treatment composition. The second treatment composition may have lower active levels of the protective agents to provide for economical and periodic maintenance of the imparted fabric protection benefits.
Abstract:
Laminates of fabric and microporous polymeric substrates are taught which have enhanced oleophobic and hydrophobic properties. The enhanced properties are obtained by contacting the laminate or any of its components with an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles of an organic polymer having pendent fluorinated alkyl groups and in which the particles are very small, being on the order of 0.01-0.1 micrometer. The small size promotes uniformity of coating when the laminate or components are coated with the dispersion and then heated to flow the particles together.

Abstract:
Monomeric amides of fluorinated alkylamines and fumaric, maleic, citraconic, mesaconic and itaconic acids; and monomeric imides of such fluorinated alkylamines and maleic, citraconic and itaconic acids form homopolymers and copolymers with other ethylenically unsaturated comonomers. The polymers obtained have valuable soil repellent properties which are especially useful in textile finishes. Preferred compounds exemplified are N-1,1dihydroperfluorooctylmaleimide and bis(N-1,1dihydroperfluorooctyl)itaconamide.
