Abstract: A method of imparting stain resistance to colored substrates which include a filamentary material is disclosed. A first dispersion of a polymer is applied to the filamentary material as a finish during the manufacture of the filamentary material, and a second dispersion of a polymer is applied as an overspray after the filamentary material has been formed into a colored substrate, to achieve at least 300 ppm fluorine from each application on the filamentary material (at least 600 ppm fluorine total). The dispersions are independently selected from the group consisting ofi. a first polymer comprising(a) from about 50 to about 85 parts by weight of units derived from a fluorinated monomer or mixture of fluorinated monomers having the formula ##STR1## (b) from about 15 to about 50 parts by weight of units derived from one or more monomers having the formula ##STR2## ii. a dispersion comprising (a) from about 10 to about 50 parts by weight the first polymer;(b) from about 5 to about 10 parts by weight an emulsifier; and(c) from about 40 to 85 parts by weight a second polymer derived from a monomer having the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sub.f is straight or branched-chain perfluoroalkyl containing 4-20 carbon atoms;R is H or CH.sub.3 ;n is an integer from 1-15; andX is Cl or Br.

Abstract: The invention comprises perfluoroalkyl substituted amines of the formula ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 1 to about 20, m is an integer between 2 or 4, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl containing 3 to 10 carbon atoms, a cycloparaffin radical containing 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkenyl radical containing 5 to 12 carbon atoms, and N or O ring substituted cycloalkenyl radical containing 5 to 12 carbon atoms, or an aryl, or R.sup.3 or R.sup.4 are joined in the form of an alkylene radical of the formula--(CHR).sub.p --wherein p is an integer from 2 to 6 and R is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms. These compounds are prepared by reacting at a temperature in the range between 0.degree. to 200.degree. C. perfluoroalkyl halides of the formulaC.sub.n F.sub.2n+1 (CR.sup.1 R.sup.2).sub.m Y (II)wherein n, m, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each has the same meaning as defined hereinabove and Y is an iodine or a bromine atom with amines of the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 have the same meaning as previously stated. The invention also comprises perfluoroalkyl substituted amines of the formula ##STR3## and mixtures of products of formula IV with ##STR4## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 have the same meaning as designated above and where n is an integer from 4 to 20.The process for producing the products of formulas IV and V and mixtures thereof is the same as that used for the products of the compounds of formula I except that in the starting compounds of formula II at least one of the radicals R.sup.1 or R.sup.2 is hydrogen, m is equal to 2 and n is an integer between 4 and 20.

Abstract: A fabric treatment composition is provided that includes at least one zeta potential modifier, a fluoropolymer and a hydrophobic agent with a melting point or glass transition temperature below 100° C., for imparting fabric protection benefits to a fabric, such as improved stain and soil resistance, oil repellency, water repellency, softness, wrinkle and damage resistance, and better hand feel. Fabric treatment compositions can be used as a pretreatment prior to washing, through soaking, or added to the treatment liquor, that is either the wash or rinse cycle of an automatic washing machine, to first provide and then maintain and refresh the fabric protection benefits imparted to the fabric, with the proviso that an intermediate rinsing step essentially devoid of added surfactant-is used after the washing cycle and prior to the fabric treatment step. Following use of a first treatment composition, protective benefits are maintained and refreshed by means of a second treatment operation employing a second treatment composition. The second treatment composition may have lower active levels of the protective agents to provide for economical and periodic maintenance of the imparted fabric protection benefits.
