Abstract: A biocompatible composite material for controlled release is disclosed, comprising a biocompatible metal oxide structure with a loaded network of pores. The pore network of the biocompatible composite material is filled with a uniformly distributed biologically active micellizing amphiphilic molecule, the size of these pores ranging from about 0.5 to about 100 nanometers. The material is characterized in that when exposed to phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), the controlled release of the active amphiphilic molecule is predominantly diffusion-driven over time.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method of making a bioceramic coating on a fibrous article for use in a medical implant, comprising steps of providing an article comprising fibers made from a biocompatible, non-biodegradable polymer; coating at least the fibers that will be in contact with bone upon use as an implant with a solution of a coating polymer to result in coated fibers having a coating polymer layer; treating the coated fibers with a dispersion of bioactive ceramic particles 0.01-10 μm in a treating solvent comprising a solvent for the coating polymer in at least one step; and substantially removing the treating solvent; to result in the particles being partly embedded in the coating polymer layer of the coated fibers.

The implants are formed of bioactive glass and have an engineered porosity. The implants may take the form of a putty, foam, fibrous cluster, fibrous matrix, granular matrix, or combinations thereof and allow for enhanced clinical results as well as ease of handling.

Abstract: A method of producing a bioactive surface on a medical device configured for cementless implantation is disclosed. The method can include treating a titanium metal or titanium alloy medical device, optionally having a titanium metal or titanium alloy porous coating, with a series of steps to obtain the bioactive surface having a nanofibrous network of titanate overlaid with hydroxyapatite particles or film. The steps can include treating the medical device with an acidic solution to obtain an activated surface; oxidizing the activated surface using plasma electrolytic oxidation to obtain an oxide layer having bioactive elements, compounds, or phases; treating the oxide layer with an alkaline solution to obtain the bioactive surface; and treating the bioactive surface with an iodine containing compound to obtain an antibacterial and bioactive surface.

Abstract: An orthopedic implant having a metal surface and a calcium phosphate layer disposed on at least part of the metal surface is described. The calcium phosphate layer has an average crystallite size of less than about 100 nm in at least one direction and dissolves for more than 2 hours in vitro. The calcium phosphate layer is substantially free of carbonate. The coating, which is formed on a sodium titanate surface, has increased shear strength and tensile strength. The coating is formed by a solution deposited hydroxyapatite process under inert conditions. The pH of the solution varies by less than 0.1 pH unit/hour during coating formation.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to bone graft substitute formulations with a liquid weight to powder weight ratio (L/P) of about 0.35 to about 0.40. The formulations disclosed herein have significantly longer set times than formulations with lower L/P ratios, and yet the cement resulting from the formulations disclosed herein have comparable dissolution rates to those of formulations having a lower L/P.
