The invention is an organic electroluminescent device that comprises organic compound layer(s) including at least one organic emitting layer sandwiched between a pair of electrodes, wherein at least one organic compound layer is formed from an organic compound material having an impurity concentration of lower than 1000 ppm. The device has the advantages of applicability to lightweight, thin and low-voltage driving displays, good luminescent capacity attenuating little even in long-term driving operation, and good durability.

The cyclization process involves reacting the isoprenoid compound with an acetal initiator under conditions sufficient to form the multiple ring compound. The isoprenoid compound is contacted with an initiator and optionally with a catalyst. Cyclization occurs by reaction of the initiator with the isoprenoid compound. Polycyclic ring assembly compound which has a specific flexible partial structure, i.e., a structure containing an aromatic ring in which adjacent carbon atoms have, bonded thereto, an aromatic ring group of another kind and an aliphatic group or aromatic ring group. Also provided are: a polymer constituted of repeating units at least part of which are structures derived from the polycyclic ring assembly compound; a solution of an organic EL material containing the polycyclic ring assembly compound or the polymer; and an organic electroluminescence device. The organic electroluminescence device has excellent heat resistance, high color purity, and a long lifetime and can emit a blue light or green light at a high luminescent efficiency.
