Abstract: Scintillating plastics resistant to crazing and fogging, methods of making and using the same are disclosed. The scintillating plastics include: one or more primary polymers present in an amount ranging from about 40 wt % to about 95 wt %; one or more secondary polymers present in an amount ranging from about 1 wt % to about 60 wt %; and one or more fluors present in an amount ranging from about 0.1 wt % to about 50 wt %. Methods of making such plastics include: creating a homogenous mixture of precursor materials including primary polymer, secondary polymer, and fluor in the amounts set forth above; and polymerizing the homogenous mixture. Methods of using such plastics include: exposing the scintillating plastic to one or more extreme environmental conditions for a predetermined amount of time without generating crazing or fogging within the scintillating plastic. Various additional features and specific embodiments of these inventive concepts are also disclosed.

Abstract: Provided is a semiconductor nanoparticle complex in which a ligand is coordinated to a surface of a semiconductor nanoparticle. The semiconductor nanoparticle is a core-shell type semiconductor nanoparticle including a core containing In and P and one or more layers of shells, wherein at least one of the shells is formed of ZnSe. The ligand includes one or more kinds of mercapto fatty acid esters represented by the following general formula (1): HS—R1—COO—R2 (1). The mercapto fatty acid ester has an SP value of 9.20 or more. The mercapto fatty acid ester has a molecular weight of 700 or less, and the average SP value of the entire ligand is 9.10 to 11.00. The present invention provides a semiconductor nanoparticle complex dispersible at a high mass fraction in a polar dispersion medium while keeping high fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of semiconductor nanoparticles.

Abstract: Triboluminescent materials that produce light emission in response to mechanical action attract significant interest due to their wide range of potential utilization for mechanoresponsive sensors, light emitting devices and stimuli-induced glowing fibers, dyes, particles, paste, and films, etc. Here, we would like to disclose a general method of generating triboluminescent polymer materials blended with wide range of luminophores that emit light in response to mechanical action emitting light in a wide range of spectrum. The light generation is achieved via a non-destructive method even in the absence of direct contact with the polymer (e.g. through the layer of another polymer). Biocompatible luminophores can be easily utilized. Light emission is also observed under dry air.
