摘要: Composite components and methods of densifying composite components are provided. For example, a composite component includes a first ply having a first plurality of unidirectional arrays of fiber tows extending in a first direction and a second ply having a second plurality of unidirectional arrays of fiber tows extending in a second direction. A first fluid pathway is defined in the first ply that has a first length greater than a first width, and a second fluid pathway is defined in the second ply that has a second length greater than a second width. The first and second fluid pathways may improve densification of the composite component by improving penetration of a densification fluid in the composite component.

摘要: Ceramic matrix composite articles include, for example, a plurality of unidirectional arrays of fiber tows in a matrix having a monomodal pore size distribution, and a fiber volume fraction between about 15 percent and about 35 percent. The articles may be formed by, for example, providing a shaped preform comprising a prepreg tape layup of unidirectional arrays of fiber tows, a matrix precursor, and a pore former, curing the shaped preform to pyrolyze the matrix precursor and burnout the pore former so that the shaped preform comprises the unidirectional arrays of fiber tows and a porous matrix having a monomodal pore size distribution, and subjecting the cured shaped preform to chemical vapor infiltration to densify the porous matrix so that the ceramic matrix composite article has a fiber volume fraction between about 15 percent and about 35 percent.

摘要: Methods, systems, and processes are used to prepare novel ceramic composite structures that are strong, durable, light-weight, high performance and suitable for a myriad of industrial applications, including, but not limited to, ceramic plates of material suitable for use as ballistic armor. The low manufacturing costs of the processes disclosed provide cheaper, faster ways of producing ceramic matrix composites at lower temperatures and allow for the existence of composite materials and structures which currently are not available.

A method of combining particles of a refractory metal or a refractory-metal compound capable of reacting or decomposing into refractory-metal nanoparticles with an organic compound having a char yield of at least 60% by weight to form a precursor mixture.

摘要: This relates to a turbine blade comprising a preformed fibrous fabric of fibres consisting of carbon, silicon carbide or rhenium fixed with a binder resin, and wherein the preformed and fixed fibrous fabric is coated and infiltrated, respectively, with B4C, wherein the preformed fibrous fabric that has been fixed and coated and infiltrated, respectively, with B4C further has a multilayer coating consisting of at least one layer of silicon carbide and at least one layer of a metal boride, a metal nitride or a metal carbide, and wherein an oxide ceramic is applied over the multilayer coating. The turbine blade is resistant to high temperatures and is particularly well suited for use in a gas turbine. Methods for producing the turbine blade are also described.

摘要: A method for fabricating a ceramic material includes impregnating a porous structure with a mixture that includes a preceramic polymer and a filler. The filler includes at least one free metal. The preceramic polymer material is then rigidized to form a green body. The green body is then thermally treated to convert the rigidized preceramic polymer material into a ceramic matrix located within pores of the porous structure. The same thermal treatment or a second, further thermal treatment is used to cause the at least one free metal to move to internal porosity defined by the ceramic matrix or pores of the porous structure.

摘要: Exemplary embodiments of the invention provide a vessel for containing or conveying molten metal therein. At least part of the outer surface of the vessel incorporates a web of metal wires embedded in the surface, the wires being mutually overlaid with openings formed therebetween. The refractory material penetrates into the openings. The web may comprise woven metal wires or non-woven wires or both. The web imparts resistance to cracking (or containment of cracks, once formed) and/or resistance to molten metal leakage if cracks develop. The invention also provides metal containment structures containing such vessels, and methods of producing the same.
