    Abstract: A vehicle bumper structure includes a lateral arrangement of hollow lobes forming an energy absorption apparatus attached to a beam. The lobes are designed to provide a predetermined peak force resistance and a predetermined energy absorption capability. Local stiffening to increase the buckling resistance and energy absorption is provided by increased stiffness regions provided in one or more locations on one or more of the lobes. The local increased stiffness regions can be provided by an increased wall thickness surrounding apertures formed in selected shear walls of the lobes or a laterally outward offset in the shape of the shear walls of the lobes.

    Abstract: An apron for a vehicle front end comprises a unitary plastic component having a front structure and a rear structure joined by an offset portion. The front and rear structures extend at rearward downward angles and in generally parallel directions, and the offset portion extends at a rearward upward angle. The apron has a relatively constant vertical dimension, such that the angled structures define a wave-shaped envelope. Preferably, a horizontal plane extending from the tip of the front structure stays within the wave-shaped envelope, so that impact forces stay within the boundary in a manner providing improved impact strength and greater energy absorption during an impact. At the same time, the front structure provides a homogeneous structure that distributes local impact stresses uniformly and more widely into the rear structure, thus providing a more uniform impact resistance less sensitive to impact location.

A vehicle shock absorber (1) is installed inside a vehicle component part so as to absorb shocks from interior or exterior. The vehicle shock absorber (1) is formed hollow by blow-molding thermoplastic plastic. A first wall (2) and a second wall (3) are spaced from and opposed to each other. A shock receiving surface (4) connects the first and second walls (2, 3). The first and second walls (2, 3) are formed with pluralities of recessed grooves (5, 6) at substantially equally spaced intervals. The recessed grooves (5, 6) are disposed substantially normal to the shock receiving surface (4).

    Abstract: A bumper system includes a tubular beam with flattened end sections, and further includes an energy absorber having a rear recess mateably receiving the tubular beam in a nested relationship, with the recess also including flat mating surfaces engaging the flattened end sections. Mounts engage a rear of the flattened end sections, and fasteners secure the tubular beam and energy absorber to the mounts. In one modified bumper system, corner sections on the energy absorber are shaped to slidingly engage a side surface of the mount and simultaneously an end of the beam upon corner impact of the vehicle. In another modified bumper system, offset ends of the tubular beam fit into a recess in an energy absorber, with its center section being between vehicle mounts.
