The disclosure provides a method for separating scrap produced during the manufacture of extruded sheets, wherein an extrudate of an extruder is fed to a calender comprising a plurality of temperature-controlled calender rollers, an actual temperature of at least one calender roll is measured, the actual temperature is compared with a nominal temperature provided for this calender roller, and in the case that a difference between the actual temperature and the nominal temperature lies outside a predefined tolerance amount, a part of an in particular endless semi-finished product exiting the calender is discharged as scrap. By treating that part of the semi-finished product which has been exposed to the wrong temperature as scrap, it is particularly easy to identify sheets that do not meet the desired quality requirements essentially without additional measuring effort, so that it is possible to easily discharge scrap produced during the manufacture of extruded sheets.

The invention relates to a method for determining the thickness of multi-layer films (13) comprising layers consisting of various non-conductive materials. According to said method, the thickness of the multi-layer film (13) is measured by a first sensor (17) and a second sensor (16) and optionally additional sensors. The first sensor (17) measures the profile of the total thickness in a short cycle with a duration of approximately 1-2 minutes, but with a large measuring error margin. The second sensor (16) measures the profile of the total thickness with a small measuring error margin but in a long cycle with a duration of approximately 10 to 30 minutes. A correction profile for the first sensor (17) can be calculated by comparing the two thickness profiles. Provided that this correction profile remains constant throughout the long cycle, it can be applied to all thickness profiles of the sensor (17) until a new, more accurate thickness profile is made available by the second sensor, permitting the calculation of a new correction profile.

The invention relates to an air ring for a blown film process, the air ring comprising: at least one air outlet for directing a stream of air outside the film; at least one component movable through a range of positions for controlling the air stream, said component being moveable to a set position within the range of positions for achieving a film of preselected properties; adjustor means for moving the component to any one of the positions; and output generating means for generating a unique output signal for each of said positions in said range to produce a unique signal representative of the set position. The invention also relates to methods of producing blown film. By providing output generating means to produce an output signal which identifies the positions of the components, component settings are reproducible and may be automated.
