Method and apparatus for removing bubbles from a molten substrate. The molten substrate from a furnace passes through a downtube to reach additional manufacturing tools, such as an extrusion bushing. One or more ultrasonic sensors are arranged along the downtube. The ultrasonic sensor(s) transmit ultrasonic energy into the molten substrate and measure a characteristic of the ultrasonic energy, such as a propagation time for the ultrasonic energy to be reflected back to the ultrasonic sensor(s). A bubble is detected when a change in the characteristic of the ultrasonic energy is detected. When a bubble is detected, flow through the downtube is diverted to a duct to remove a slug of molten substrate that includes the bubble.

A method and apparatus for applying a blended rubber composition directly onto a tire building drum or core is described. The method includes the steps of extruding a first rubber compound through a main extruder and a main gear pump. A second rubber compound is extruded through a second extruder and into a second gear pump. The output from the second gear pump is fed into the main extruder. The ratio of the first compound to the second compound is varied by adjusting the speed of the main gear pump and the speed of the second gear pump. A continuous strip of rubber formed of said first compound and said second compound is layed directly onto a tire building machine to form a first layer of rubber having a first blend ratio. The speed of the main gear pump and the second gear pump is adjusted to obtain a second blend ratio of said first compound to said second compound, and then a strip of rubber formed of said second blend ratio is applied to the tire building drum or core.

In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a system for controlling the properties of an extrusion from a production line is provided. The production line comprises a raw material feed, a mixer, and an extruder. The control system comprises one or more ammeters electrically coupled to an electrically driven mixing motor and an electrically driven extrusion motor. Output signals indicative of the load amperes IM of the mixing motor and the load amperes IX of the extrusion motor are provided. The controller is in communication with the raw material feed and the ammeter and is programmed to compare the load amperes IX of the extrusion motor to the load amperes IM of the mixing motor and determine whether a result of the load ampere comparison warrants modification of an operating parameter of the production line. If so, the controller modifies one or more operating parameters of the production line to account for the variation from the target value. Additional embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

Within the value chain, it is possible to optimize the method using said data, to improve the construction of the used machines and systems and to improve the system technology as well as method technology for producing the sheet material.
