Disclosed is a hip-joint socket for insertion into bone tissue. The hip-joint socket has an outer metal shell and an inner antifriction shell, the contact surface of the antifriction shell in the metal shell being conical in shape. The antifriction liner lies upon the conical contact surface without self-locking and the antifriction liner is fixed in the metal shell by a retaining ring. The antifriction shell is thus protected against canting and drop-out but can be removed out of its seat nondestructively and replaced.

A metal fixation element is disclosed for receiving a plastic socket component of an artificial hip joint. The fixation element includes a frontal region which faces the pelvic bone. The frontal region has a central bore, with a screw thread to receive an insertion tool. The element also includes at least one conically tapering wall spaced from the frontal region. A self-tapping screw thread on the outer surface of the tapering wall provides for cementless fixation of the element in the pelvic bone. There is further provided an additional conically tapering wall between the frontal region and the first conically tapering wall. Three apertures are located in the frontal region. A cover element is rotatably mounted within the fixation element closely abutting the frontal region. The cover element has three equally spaced openings separated by continuous positions for selective opening and closing of the three apertures in the frontal region.

The joint socket consists of two parts, namely an outer split sleeve and a conical insert. The conical insert contains a hemispherical socket for receiving a joint head.The outer surface of the sleeve is in the form of a truncated cone and is provided with depressions and ribs as well as longitudinal grooves. The ribs serve to penetrate into an artifically created socket bearing of a bone to insure a secure primary fixation in a cement-free anchorage. A firm securement of the socket is insured by the expansion of the sleeve and the penetration of the ribs into the bone.

A prosthetic cup member, in particular for use in the hip joint, has a hollow outer shell which is adapted to be affixed to the bone. The cup has an inner shell having a recess for accommodating a bearing element. The inner shell and the outer shell are spaced radially from each other at a predetermined distance to define an intermediate space therebetween. The outer surface of the outer shell has coaxial threads interrupted by grooves extending transversely to the thread. The threads are self-tapping threads and are formed to permit the threaded outer shell to be screwed into the bone. The outer shell has a plurality of elongated openings or slots connected to the intermediate space to permit loose spongious material such as cancellous bone, to be introduced into and held in the intermediate space during surgical emplacement of the cup member. This enhances the growth of new bone tissue into the intermediate space. The elongated openings extend over almost the entire axial length of the outer shell.

The external surface of the hip joint socket is provided with a contrast ring in a diametric plane of the joint head receiving cavity as well as with a metallic measuring ring in the upper surface of the socket body. The measuring ring is concentric to the axis of rotation of the body and is parallel to the plane of the contrast ring. By measuring the distance of the two metallic rings from each other in an X-ray picture, a determination can be made as to whether a displacement of the center of the spherical joint head is due in part to a cold flow of the socket material or exclusively to abrasion.
