摘要: An implant comprising a multi-directional locking mechanism that allows a bone fixation device, such as a screw, to be rigidly affixed to the implant in a plurality of angles relative to the implant. The implant can be a bone plate, a component of a joint prosthesis or the like. The locking mechanism comprises a passage hole in the implant for passage of a bone fixation device therethrough. One or more beam members are arranged adjacent the passage hole and a space is associated with each beam member. Each space allows the associated beam member to move into or about the space upon axial and/or radial deformation of the beam member caused by fastening the bone fixation device to a bone. The beam members and associated elements of the locking mechanism are sufficiently thin to permit axial and/or radial deformation. And said deformation causes the fixation device to be locked in place relative to the implant.

摘要: An artificial acetabulum having a multilayer shell-core composite structure includes a ceramic acetabular liner, a transition layer and an acetabular shell. The acetabular shell is made of a porous metal, a porous alloy or a porous toughened ceramic; the ceramic acetabular liner is made of a ceramic material; and the transition layer is made of a composite material comprising materials of the acetabular shell and the ceramic acetabular liner. The artificial acetabulum is manufactured through sintering a green body of successively stacked layers of the ceramic acetabular liner, the transition layer and the acetabular shell, and the green body of successively stacked layers is obtained through a powder co-injection molding process. The ceramic acetabular liner of the artificial acetabulum has a high rigidness, corrosion-proof and wear-proof performance. The acetabular shell of the artificial acetabulum has a high toughness and shock resistant performance.

摘要: A guide for assisting with attachment of a stock prosthetic implant to a patient tissue includes a lower guide surface configured to contact an upper implant surface of the stock prosthetic implant when a lower implant surface of the stock prosthetic implant contacts the patient tissue. An upper guide surface is accessible to a user when the lower guide surface is in contact with the upper implant surface. At least one guiding aperture extends through the guide body between the upper and lower guide surfaces at a predetermined aperture location with respect to the guide body and defines a predetermined target trajectory through the guide body. At least one of the target trajectory and the aperture location of each guiding aperture is preselected responsive to preoperative imaging of the patient tissue. A method of assisting with attachment of a stock prosthetic implant to a patient tissue is also provided.

摘要: The present invention provides a method for stabilizing a fractured bone. The method includes positioning an elongate rod in the medullary canal of the fractured bone and forming a passageway through the cortex of the bone. The passageway extends from the exterior surface of the bone to the medullary canal of the bone. The method also includes creating a bonding region on the elongate rod. The bonding region is generally aligned with the passageway of the cortex. Furthermore, the method includes positioning a fastener in the passageway of the cortex and on the bonding region of the elongate rod and thermally bonding the fastener to the bonding region of the elongate rod while the fastener is positioned in the passageway of the cortex.

摘要: An orthopedic component having multiple layers that are selected to provide an overall modulus that is substantially lower than the modulus of known orthopedic components to more closely approximate the modulus of the bone into which the orthopedic component is implanted. In one exemplary embodiment, the orthopedic component is an acetabular shell. For example, the acetabular shell may include an outer layer configured for securement to the natural acetabulum of a patient and an inner layer configured to receive an acetabular liner. The head of a femoral prosthesis articulates against the acetabular liner to replicate the function of a natural hip joint. Alternatively, the inner layer of the acetabular shell may act as an integral acetabular liner against which the head of the femoral prosthesis articulates.

A trocar is placed through a guide ring on an arm of the instrument to form the portal incision and small path. Impaction of an acetubular shell is carried out along the impaction axis thus formed.

摘要: A hip joint apparatus is described. The apparatus has an acetabular cup designed for both seated engagement within a patient's acetabulum, and articulatory reception of a matingly shaped femoral component, wherein the dome of the acetabular cup has holes configured for accepting wires and variable angle locking screws to facilitate attachment of the acetabular cup to the acetabulum, and wherein the rim of the acetabular cup has holes configured for accepting wires to provide provisional stability to the acetabular cup. The apparatus also has an insertion handle with a graspable portion and a mating portion, the mating portion attached to the graspable portion and configured for engaging with the rim of the acetabular cup, thereby coupling the insertion handle to the acetabular cup.
