A structure may be used as an implant or a component of an external fixator for a fractured long bone with that structure having anisotropic and viscoelastic properties, such as through additive manufacturing techniques.

Abstract: A method of generating a custom three-dimensional model of a bone is disclosed. A 2D image of the bone is obtained and an orientation and scale of the 2D image are aligned to a pre-determined coordinate system. Based on the 2D image, a representative bone is identified from a library of representative bones that are aligned to the pre-determined coordinate system. Based on the 2D image, an ideal view of a 3D model of the representative bone is selected. Modifications may be made to the 3D model by using additional representative bones from the library. A custom three-dimensional model of the bone is thereby generated.

Abstract: A longilineal member, which may serve as a handle, and may be formed of a synthetic or other relatively soft material, is designed to engage the threaded hole of an acetabular cup, for the manipulation of the cup during surgery. A force distribution element, shaped to conform to the inner curved surface of the cup is trapped between the cup and the longilineal member so as to reduce the forces on the threaded portion of the longilineal member during such manipulations, so as to avert the risk of the thread stripping.

Abstract: A magnetic impactor assembly is described herein. The magnetic impactor assembly generally includes a guide receptacle, and an impactor guide magnetically coupled to the guide receptacle to form a magnetic interface therebetween. The guide receptacle is attachable to a surgical device such as a surgical robotic manipulator arm. The impactor guide receives and guides an impactor to permit a user to impact a prosthesis into a bone of a patient in a planned position and orientation. The magnetic impactor assembly reduces the transmission of excessive forces to a patient or the surgical device if an off-axis impaction force is generated on the impactor through the decoupling of the impactor guide from the guide receptacle.

Abstract: An orthopaedic prosthetic system includes a plate having one or more flanges and an acetabular shell component. Each flange includes a surface configured to engage a patient's bone. The plate also includes a central ring that engages a lip extending from an outer surface of the shell component. The ring may be mechanically attached to the lip using multiple fasteners. The system may include multiple plates each having a different configuration from other plates, and may also include multiple shell components each having a different configuration from other shell components. Methods for assembling and using the prosthetic system are also disclosed.

Abstract: In another embodiment, a hip joint navigation jig is provided that includes an anatomical interface comprising a bone engagement portion. A registration jig is also provided that is coupled, e.g., removeably, with the anatomical interface. A rotatable member is provided for rotation about an axis that is not vertical when the jig is mounted to the bone adjacent to a hip joint and the registration jig is coupled with the anatomical interface. An anatomy engaging probe is coupled with the rotatable member for rotation about the axis and is translatable to enable the probe to be brought into contact with a plurality of anatomical landmarks during a procedure. An inertial sensor is coupled with the probe to indicate orientation related to the landmarks, the sensor being disposed in a different orientation relative to horizontal when the probe is in contact with the landmarks.
