Abstract: A method of monitoring a subject includes detecting subject head motion via a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor associated with a device worn by the subject, such as a device worn on a region of the head or a headset attached to an ear. The head motion information from the MEMS sensor is processed to determine subject head displacement relative to an origin and/or to identify footstep information, and the processed head motion information is transmitted to a remote device. Processing the head motion information from the MEMS sensor may be performed via at least one processor associated with the device worn by the subject and/or via a second device in telemetric communication with the MEMS sensor. The method may include processing head motion information from the MEMS sensor to determine if the subject has fallen down and/or is not moving.

Abstract: A wearable monitoring device includes a band configured to at least partially encircle a portion of the body of a subject and at least one optical emitter and at least one optical detector attached to the band. The band includes a generally cylindrical outer body portion and a generally cylindrical inner body portion secured together in concentric relationship. The inner body portion includes light transmissive material and has outer and inner surfaces. A layer of cladding material is near the inner body portion inner surface, and a plurality of windows are formed in the cladding material that each serve as a light-guiding interface to the body of the subject. The plurality of windows are circumferentially spaced apart from each other.

Abstract: A surgical instrument navigation system is provided that visually simulates a virtual volumetric scene of a body cavity of a patient from a point of view of a surgical instrument residing in the cavity of the patient. The surgical instrument navigation system includes: a surgical instrument; an imaging device which is operable to capture scan data representative of an internal region of interest within a given patient; a tracking subsystem that employs electro-magnetic sensing to capture in real-time position data indicative of the position of the surgical instrument; a data processor which is operable to render a volumetric, perspective image of the internal region of interest from a point of view of the surgical instrument; and a display which is operable to display the volumetric perspective image of the patient.

Abstract: A wearable device includes a housing with a window and an electronic module supported by the housing. The electronic module includes a photoplethysmography sensor, a motion sensor, and a signal processor that processes signals from the motion sensor and signals from the photoplethysmography sensor. The signal processor is configured to remove frequency bands from the photoplethysmography sensor signals that are outside of a range of interest using a band-pass filter to produce pre-conditioned signals, and to further process the pre-conditioned signals using the motion sensor signals to reduce motion artifacts from footsteps during subject running. The device includes non-air light transmissive material in optical communication with the photoplethysmography sensor and the window that serves as a light guide for the photoplethysmography sensor. The window optically exposes the photoplethysmography sensor to a body of a subject wearing the device via the non-air light transmissive material.

Abstract: An earpiece module includes a physiological sensor, an external energy sensor, a transceiver, a communication module, a data storage component, and a power source. The communication module includes a microphone, a speaker, and a signal processor. The signal processor processes audio information received from a remote source via the transceiver and communicates the processed audio information to a subject via the speaker. The signal processor processes information in real time from the physiological sensor and the external energy sensor, and the signal processor provides biofeedback to the subject based on signals produced by the physiological sensor. The data storage component includes a plurality of algorithms. At least one algorithm focuses processing resources on extracting physiological information from the physiological sensor, at least one algorithm is configured to be modified or uploaded wirelessly via the transceiver, and at least one algorithm is a compression/decompression (CODEC) algorithm.

Abstract: A method for analyzing biological specimens by spectral imaging to provide a medical diagnosis includes obtaining spectral and visual images of biological specimens and registering the images to detect cell abnormalities, pre-cancerous cells, and cancerous cells. This method eliminates the bias and unreliability of diagnoses that is inherent in standard histopathological and other spectral methods. In addition, a method for correcting confounding spectral contributions that are frequently observed in microscopically acquired infrared spectra of cells and tissue includes performing a phase correction on the spectral data. This phase correction method may be used to correct various types of absorption spectra that are contaminated by reflective components.
