Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are provided for an automated sleep assistant. An automated sleep assistant may comprise an audio input device for capturing sounds and utterances made by a user while sleeping. Audio data may be collected and analyzed to identify sleep patterns indicative of an adverse sleep-related condition such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). A pillow comprising a plurality of regions with one or more sensors, one or more inflatable air bladders, and one or more haptic feedback devices may be utilized. A base unit device physically connected to the pillow may determine one or more external forces that mitigate the adverse sleep-related condition and cause the pillow to apply the one or more external forces to the user, for example, by using a pump to inflate an air bladder to help the user's head lift or tip to a specific angle that opens his or her airway.

Abstract: A non-contact respiratory monitoring system comprises a magnetic microwire sensor coil that detects magnetic field changes due to motion of a magnet attached to a patient's chest. Field lines emanating from the magnet are parallel to a circumferential loop area of the coil and the coil is positioned at a distance to magnetically couple to the magnet. Impedance in the coil changes when the distance of the magnet to the coil changes due to the patient's breathing. An alternating voltage across coil is modified by the change in impedance. An impedance analyzer coupled to the coil applies the alternating voltage and measures the impedance changes. A computer system controls operation of impedance analyzer, receives respiratory monitoring information based on the coil's impedance changes from the impedance analyzer, and generates a graphical display of the respiratory monitoring information.

Abstract: Non-invasive systems and methods for quantifying respiratory muscle effort (RME) (or breathing effort, work-of-breathing) are provided. The systems and methods utilize simultaneously measured EMG and accelerometer signals. The measured EMG signal is preprocessed to produce both a signal accentuating regular breathing activity and a signal accentuating sniff activity (deep, sharp inhalations). Time intervals of candidate sniffs are determined from the preprocessed EMG signals. The measured accelerometer signal is preprocessed to produce multiple signals accentuating either upper or lower frequency band activity. Features of the preprocessed EMG and accelerometer signals corresponding to the time intervals of candidate sniffs are analyzed to determine if the candidate sniffs constitute actual sniffs or artifacts. Subsequently, after maximum sniff effort has been identified, RME is quantified by the ratio of the mean of the maxima of regular breathing activity to the value of the maximum sniff effort.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for monitoring a person suffering from a chronic medical condition predicts and assesses physiological changes which could affect the care of that subject. Examples of such chronic diseases include (but are not limited to) heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and diabetes. Monitoring includes measurements of respiratory movements, which can then be analyzed for evidence of changes in respiratory rate, or for events such as hypopneas, apneas and periodic breathing. Monitoring may be augmented by the measurement of nocturnal heart rate in conjunction with respiratory monitoring. Additional physiological measurements can also be taken such as subjective symptom data, blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and various molecular markers. Embodiments for detection of respiratory patterns and heart rate are disclosed, together with exemplar implementations of decision processes based on these measurements.

Abstract: Systems and methods for assessing compliance with position therapy. In an embodiment, position therapy is provided to a user while the user is wearing a position therapy device. The position therapy comprises, by the device, collecting positional data, determining positions of the user over a time period based on the positional data, and, when it is determined that the user is in a target position, providing feedback to the user to influence the user to change to a non-target position. In addition, the device stores a duration of use in its memory. The duration of use indicates a duration that the user has used the wearable position therapy device in each of one or more positions. An assessment of the user's compliance with the position therapy is then provided based, at least in part, on the duration of use.
