Abstract:
An electronic device including a housing defining an aperture, a display component positioned in the aperture, and a filler material at least partially surrounding a periphery of the display component. The filler material can contact the display component and a portion of the housing defining the aperture.
Abstract:
Custom antenna structures may be used to improve antenna performance and to compensate for manufacturing variations in electronic device antennas. An electronic device antenna may include an antenna tuning element and conductive structures formed from portions of a peripheral conductive housing member and other conductive antenna structures. The antenna tuning element may be connected across a gap in the peripheral conductive housing member. The custom antenna structures may be used to couple the antenna tuning element to a fixed custom location on the peripheral conductive housing member to help satisfy design criteria and to compensate for manufacturing variations in the conductive antenna structures that could potentially lead to undesired variations in antenna performance. Custom antenna structures may include springs and custom paths on dielectric supports.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatuses are disclosed that allow an electronic device to autonomously adapt one or more user alerts to the current operating environment of the electronic device. For example, some embodiments may include a method comprising providing a plurality of alert devices in an electronic device, determining an operating environment of the electronic device using a sensor of the electronic device, and actuating at least one of the plurality of alert devices that corresponds to the determined operating environment.
Abstract:
The disclosed embodiments provide a battery cell. The battery cell includes a set of layers including a cathode with an active coating, a separator, and an anode with an active coating. The battery cell also includes a pouch enclosing the layers. Finally, the battery cell has a three-dimensional non-rectangular shape to facilitate efficient use of space within a portable electronic device powered by the battery cell.
Abstract:
A handheld electronic device may be provided that contains a conductive housing and other conductive elements. The conductive elements may form an antenna ground plane. One or more antennas for the handheld electronic device may be formed from the ground plane and one or more associated antenna resonating elements. Transceiver circuitry may be connected to the resonating elements by transmission lines such as coaxial cables. Ferrules may be crimped to the coaxial cables. A bracket with extending members may be crimped over the ferrules to ground the coaxial cables to the housing and other conductive elements in the ground plane. The ground plane may contain an antenna slot. A dock connector and flex circuit may overlap the slot in a way that does not affect the resonant frequency of the slot. Electrical components may be isolated from the antenna using isolation elements such as inductors and resistors.
Abstract:
An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include one or more antennas. The antennas may include cellular telephone antennas, wireless local area network antennas, antenna structures for receiving satellite navigation system signals, and other antennas. An antenna may have an antenna resonating element such as an inverted-F antenna resonating element. The inverted-F antenna resonating element may have an inverted-F antenna resonating element arm formed from metal traces on a flexible printed circuit. The flexible printed circuit may be soldered to an antenna grounding clip. A screw may attach the clip, a speaker tab, a connector bracket, and other metal structures to a metal device housing that serves as ground for the antenna. The screw may be isolated from the antenna grounding clip and the other metal structures by an insulating structure such as an insulating gasket.
Abstract:
Various systems of an electronic deice and methods for manufacturing the same are provided. In some embodiments, a routing assembly is provided that may not only route a cable along a circuit board, but that may also shield and electronic component or secure an electronic component to the circuit board. In some other embodiments, there is provided a mechanism for electrically coupling two components of an electronic device that may also be visually appealing in the context of other portions of the electronic device.

Abstract:
An electrical component may be mounted on a substrate such as a ceramic substrate. Contacts may be formed on upper and lower surfaces of the substrate. The electrical component may be soldered to the contacts on the upper surface. The contacts on the lower surface may be used to solder the substrate to a printed circuit. During manufacturing, it may be desirable to use metal traces on a ceramic panel to make connections to contacts on the substrate. Following singulation of the ceramic panel to form the ceramic substrate, some of the metal traces may run to the edge of the ceramic substrate. A folded tab of the printed circuit may form a shield that covers these exposed traces. A divided metal-coated groove or a row of divided metal-coated vias running along each edge of the substrate may also provide shielding.
