    摘要: An engraver including an automatic tool changer and verification system for changing engraving tools on engraving heads. The engraver includes a turret having a plurality of workholders for holding a plurality of replacement tools. Some of the workholders are empty for replacing a worn tool from an engraving head on the engraver. When it is desired to change a tool on the engraving head, an empty tool holder is indexed to a tool changing position opposite the engraving head whereupon the worn tool is transferred from the engraving head to the tool changer. Thereafter, the tool changer is indexed to a position where a replacement tool is situated in opposed relationship with the engraving head. The tool changer includes a pneumatic system for causing the worn tools and replacement tools to be transferred between the engraving head and the tool changer. The engraver also utilizes a tool verification routine for verifying that a tool on the engraving head is the correct tool and/or is not defective. Moreover, the engraver may be equipped with an engraving head turret having multiple engraving heads for indexing into engraving relationship with a cylinder to be engraved. The multiple-engraving head turret facilitates, for example, reducing the number of required tool changes.

    摘要: Detection and gauging of a joint (18) in a rotating and axially moving drilling tool (16) subject to transverse axial displacement is achieved by positioning an ultrasonic sensor assembly (12) coaxially encircling the tool in a plane perpendicular to the tool. The sensor assembly (12) generates more than one reflected pulse to represent changes in tool (16) diameter by transmitting a beam from at least one ultrasonic sensor (32) toward the tool (16) as the tool axially advances or recedes, perpendicularly piercing the plane of the sensor assembly (12). Each reflected pulse is converted to an electrical output signal, all of which signals are summed to minimize measurement distortion due to noise and transverse axial displacement of the rotating tool and compared to a threshold detection voltage in a signal processor (14) to generate a detection output pulse.

    摘要: A sensing device for monitoring the presence of a tool or other object on an automatic machine comprises a sensing head adapted to be mounted on the machine. The sensing head has a sensing needle mounted on the output shaft of a reversible motor actuated on each cycle of the automatic machine for movement through a swing angle such that the sensing needle will either contact the monitored object or complete the full swing angle movement resulting in a cycle continue or cycle stop signal to the automatic machine control. The swing angle is manually adjustable by a setting ring on the sensing head for either clockwise or counterclockwise initial rotation of the sensing needle through any desired angle up to 180.degree. degrees.

    摘要: A compensation system for a computer-controlled machining apparatus having a controller and including a cutting tool and a workpiece holder which are movable relative to one another along a preprogrammed path during a machining operation utilizes a camera and a vision computer for gathering information at a preselected stage of a machining operation relating to the actual shape and size of the cutting edge of the cutting tool and for altering the preprogrammed path in accordance with detected variations between the actual size and shape of the cutting edge and an assumed size and shape of the cutting edge. The camera obtains an image of the cutting tool against a background so that the cutting tool and background possess contrasting light intensities, and the vision computer utilizes the contrasting light intensities of the image to locate points therein which correspond to points along the actual cutting edge. Following a series of computations involving the determining of a tool center from the points identified along the tool edge, the results of the computations are fed to the controller where the preprogrammed path is altered as aforedescribed.

    摘要: A non-contact type ring setter uses a pressurized gas operated sensor comprising two nozzles, each having an elongated opening for passing the pressurized gas. The openings are spaced apart and opposite to each other. A drill bit is moved relative to a collar, with the line of travel of the drill bit passing through the space between the two openings. Each of the elongated openings has a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the direction of travel of the drill bit. When the collar and the drill bit are moved relative to each other a predetermined amount, the gas pressure detected by the sensor changes.
