    摘要: A drill bit is disclosed including a rigid cutting tool elongated along a central axis having opposed sides, where one side includes a cutting edge and an opposing side includes a shank for selective engagement with a drill chuck. The drill bit includes a first light path capable of communicating light between the shank side of the drill bit and the cutting edge side of the drill bit. The drill bit may be used with a breach assessment mechanism including a light source configured to provide selective illumination along the light path and a light sensor. Processor logic may be programmed to assess signals from the light sensor indicative of reflected light from a cutting surface contacting the cutting side of the drill bit.

A controller is coupled to the force sensor, is coupleable to a workpiece surface position sensor, and is configured to record the through-hole depth of the workpiece or stack of workpieces in response to signals received from the workpiece surface position sensor when the drill bit reaches a drill bit exit point. The cutting force sensor is configured and positionable to sense cutting force transmitted between a drill spindle and a spindle housing.

    摘要: A method of operating a drill, or like cutting tool, facilitates efficient operation when drilling structural steel components, or like workpieces, which typically exhibit dimensional variations. Instead of controlling drill operations by the specific degree of advancement of the drill, the present invention contemplates that the drill is initially operated, while disengaged from the workpiece, to establish a no-load value of operation. Thereafter, the drill is advanced into the workpiece while it is operating to engage and penetrate the workpiece, while the load on the electric motor operating the drill is monitored. Advancement of the drill is discontinued, and the drill withdrawn, when the load on the drill drops to a value which is no more than the no-load value, plus a predetermined percentage thereof. Efficient operation is desirably promoted, since the drill can be efficiently repositioned when hole formation is complete.

    摘要: The invention relates to a device and method for analysis of a tool 50 e.g. used on a machine tool. A tool detector 5 includes a light emitter 12 and a light receiver 34. Tool 50 when progressed into a beam 20 of light emitted from the emitter 12 will cause a signal from the receiver to change. Circuitry 32 includes a digital signal processor which processes the signal from the receiver and produces an output only if the signal conforms to a predetermined condition. Preferably this predetermined condition could be e.g. a characteristic shape of the signal from the receiver, a change in a value derived from a succession of such signals or a change in the minimum or maximum values of a succession of signals from the receiver.

    摘要: There is provided an apparatus and method for detecting stuck tools in automated machining operations. When a machining operation on a workpiece is finished, the tools are retracted from the workpiece. Prior to moving the workpiece to another machining operation, a stuck tool detector is moved along a plane of separation between the machine head and the workpiece. If a stuck tool is present, the detector senses the stuck tool and sends an alarm signal of the stuck tool condition so that the operator or controlling microprocessor based system is alerted to the stuck tool. Appropriate actions or repairs can then be carried out.
