In a new boil-off gas removal system for a liquid storage tank, boil-off vapor from the storage tank is first pressurized in the low-stage compressor. The pressurized vapor may be cooled to near cryogenic temperature in a cooler that can include a preliminary cooler and/or a high-pressure gas exchanger in which the pressurized vapor is cooled against boil-off vapor. The pressurized vapor may also be cooled by the addition of cryogenic liquid through a branch on the liquid supply line running from the low-stage pump in the storage tank. The cooled, pressurized vapor is directed to a heat exchanger where the cool, pressurized vapor travels in a path in which it is condensed against cryogenic liquid that travels in another, separate path.

A system and method provide for storage and supply of a pressurized gas aboard a launch vehicle such as a rocket-powered craft. Certain rocket powered vehicles, require that one or more propellant tanks be pressurized for a continuous supply of propellant to the rocket engines and to maintain tank structural integrity. According to the system described herein, certain heating elements may be employed for controlling the pressure in a gas supply bottle during the outflow of gas from the bottle so as to provide a continuous supply of pressurized gas and to make available of a large percentage of the gas stored in the bottle. Further, the system described herein provides for the storage of helium under densities above that of liquid helium and through use of a heat source, such as rocket engine supplied hot gas, provides a supply of gas such that it can be used for tank pressurization. The system utilizes unusual properties of helium under extremely low temperature and high pressure conditions to disperse the requisite heat within the bottle using only free convective effects.

Pressure of the boil-off coolant is employed to prevent the liquid coolant from entering a relative-motion gap about the bayonet, while the boil-off coolant flows through the gap to reduce heating of the bayonet. Flow of noncryogenic gas is used to regulate flow of the boil-off coolant and to minimize contamination of the coolant by bearing lubricant.
