Abstract: A polymer may have a molecular mass of less than 8,000 g/mol and a polymolecularity index PI of less than 3, produced by free radical polymerization, in water, and at a temperature higher than 50° C., of at least one anionic monomer comprising at least one polymerizable olefinic unsaturation and at least one carboxylic acid function, in the presence of phosphorus with a degree of oxidation I, phosphorus with a degree of oxidation III and a radical-generating compound. Such polymers may be produced and use for grinding mineral matter, as a detergent agent, or as an anti-scaling agent.

Abstract: A process for making a water filter having the steps of hydropulping particulate and fibrous ingredients including a quantity of fibrillated cellulose with water to create a suspension, circulating the suspension in a molding tank, submerging a mold having cavities in the circulating suspension, applying a vacuum to the cavities to draw the suspension into the cavities such that the water passes through the mold and the ingredients accumulate within the cavities to form a dewatered material, ejecting the dewatered material from the mold to create a molded object, drying and curing the molded object and capping an open end of the molded object to make a filter that flows under gravity and is naturally hydrophilic with a mean flow path (MFP) as determined by porometry of less than 5 micron and preferably less than 2 micron.

Abstract: Sustainable paper-based packaging materials, e.g., paper-based food packaging materials, are described. The packaging materials are based on paper formed from fiber derived from waste biomass, such as hemp hurds, mixes containing hemp hurds and hemp bast fibers, bagasse, and cocoa pod husks. Also described are methods of making the packaging materials. The methods can include environmentally friendly pulping and/or bleaching processes.

Abstract: A biodegradable filter for the removal of various pollutants, contaminants, or harmful substances from the surrounding air, and a method of fabrication. The filter includes 30% by weight of cellulose nanofibers, 30% by weight of activated carbon, and 20% by weight of polyethylene glycol. The cellulose nanofibers and activated carbon are isolated from date palm biomass, making the filter cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Abstract: Systems and methods as disclosed herein automatically provide real-time dosing corrections for an industrial process wherein enzyme blends are applied to natural fibers for pulp/paper production. An initial enzyme blend (e.g., enzymes and supporting formulation components, as relevant) and respective dose rates are selected to be applied based on expected fiber surface substrate characterization, expected fiber quality characterization, the physical conditions of the system being treated, respective characteristics of the initially selected enzyme blend components, etc. Upon application of the initial enzyme blend, online sensors provide real-time feedback data corresponding to measured actual values for the fiber surface substrate characterization and fiber quality characterization. A replacement enzyme blend (enzymes and supporting formulation components) and respective dose rates thereof is dynamically selected based on the feedback data. The enzyme dosing stage can be optimized responsive to product changes and/or variations in fiber sources/blend and/or physical conditions, substantially in real time.

Abstract: The present disclosure describes acyl halide liquid dispersions and tunable methods of treating cellulosic materials with compositions that provide increased hydrophobicity and/or lipophobicity to such materials without sacrificing the biodegradability thereof. The methods as disclosed provide for reacting acyl halides with and binding of saccharide fatty acid esters on cellulosic materials, including that the disclosure provides products made by such methods. The materials thus treated display higher hydrophobicity, lipophobicity, barrier function, and mechanical properties, and may be used in any application where such features are desired.
